This weekend while fishing at mar don, I talked to the security guy and asked him what they are catching them on. He told me there was a man at the dock who made all of his own jigs and he was catching some pretty nice crappie. He said the man goes to the $1 store and buys feather dusters. He uses the feathers to make his jigs. I think this is a great idea. All you need is an armature fly tying kit and your set. I got one about 6 years ago for X mas. It wasn't too expensive I dont think and came w/ a lot of different feathers and furs. But when you buy the feathers at the stores they are not cheap, I have seen peacock feathers for $100 a piece. Also jigs arnt cheap either but you can probally make them yourself like this for under $.10

Peacock feathers are 100 dollars a piece? That's insane. I used to have a neighbor who'd give us those for free as a kid. I'm going into the wrong profession.

Yeah $100 a piece is a little steep. But I have seen them for way cheaper. I dont know why that one was so expensive. It was one of the biggest tail feathers I have ever seen though.

I have a few patterns for jigs that work pretty well and are cheap to make.
All you need is the jigheads and a few colors of yarn.
Cut a piece of yarn about four inches and fold it in half.
Put the fold up near the head of the jig and make a few wraps to hold it in place.
Now take another color and wrap this to make the body.
You can now cut the tails to the size you want.
If you want to bulk up the tail a bit, just fray the yarn some.
I will also add a bit of tinsel for a bit of flash.
