If you want big tout there are some better lakes in Thurston Co. Offut I found produces bigger and healthier fish Black also has some big trout... But if you want to stick with St.Clair I would look in the bigger areas in the back that have some deeper water. If you launch from the big launch and go right the first cove on the left is a good place to start!

I fished St. Clair with a buddy of mine 7/5 mid afternoon from shore by the bridge right of the launch. We fished for an hour and caught nothing. We talked to all the boats that went by and the best we heard was 1 fish per boat and everyone said the bite has been pretty slow.

At Black due to the boat traffic I drift a crawler and corkie off the bottom with a little special mix Smelly Jelly:-$

It isn't secret:cheers: If I was fishing early am I would pick up some repalas in 3 inch rainbow or perch. And as the day brightened I would get a Double Whammy (link) I fish the green and red, green and silver, green and orange and green on green.... Now the key I have found at Offut is find the biggest blades and fish those lures slow and watch your poles they will tell you when you are at the right speed the tip will show the most action. (also use the bigger ones with two hooks) I use the two hook set up so I can add a half crawler. I thread the first hook from the cut end down then I take the bottom hook and just run it through towards the end of the crawler but not to far you want some slack between hooks so the crawler runs straight. Oh I nearly forgot I prefer the hammered copper and silver blades silver if sunny copper if darker or if water is stained.. ( also the silver blades with the green shiny stickers work well also)

Both of these set ups I run behind a 1/8 - 1 oz of lead and a high quality swivel. Offut is not deep so be careful I start out trying to get my bait to run at about 6' down and then adjust from there..

What size boat and motor and I will set up a map and trolling directions...

Hope this helps
TAZ

Thanks very much for the double wammy set ups in structions. Ive used these in success in the past with the crawler also. I lost a double wammy in St clair last week So going to hit the store tonight after work and stock back up. Ive used 1/4 oz cresent weight in the past So I will get some of the 1/8 - 1 oz cresent weights also. Ill watch the tip of the rod for actiona nd buy some double wammys with nice big silver blades and get some with copper also. I have a 12 ft aluminum boat with a 4hp mcculloch outboard( really old school) and a minnekota 34 thrust troller I use for trolling.

Thanks,
Bob

TAZ thanks again for the map. Ill try to get out there next week. I actually hit St clair this morning 7/9/09 at 6am and trolled from the rough boat launch towards the spot you mentioned. I wanted to check out the lake so I figured i would troll around the north east end of the lake to the cove you mentioned. right away leaving the boat launch I got hits on my NEW double wammy with nightcrawler with a 1 oz weight about 30 pulls down ( feet) Slow troll on speed 2 on minnekota . I figured damn. Ive got four fish ( planters 8-10 inches)already( threw them back) and its only 645am and Im not even to the cove spot yet. The 4hp motor was acting up a little :^o and I didnt want to get stuck over there and troll all the way back so I turned around and continued to fish the deep spots near the rough boat launch. I did hit a cove on this side for kicks and fished the bottom with powerbait and BAM a big guy grabbed on. Thought it was a snag but when I reversed the motor the tip went crazy. got it to the boat . Saw it ...ready to net it .... and then it spit the hook. As I looked down and it swam away I saw a nice trout . So they are in there. Fished until 10am and got outta there. Only 1 other boat there. Next visit your cove reccomendation :cheese: and I fixed the motor ( My duh.... mistake make sure the fuel petcock is open). And this motor is really finiky with the fuel mixture. Keep it clean and fresh. :alien:

happy fishing TAZ.:compress:
