I just hit the limit for the first time in my life!!!!!

I may be wrong, but I think that is illegal. Technically, once you reach your limit, you must stop. You can release the fish if you are not using bait and continue fishing, but if using bait, you have to retain them.

A daily limit is a daily limit. Whether you choose to keep them or give them away. Thats part of reading the regs. Im glad that you reached your limit though. But that is when you need to be happy about that and obey the rules and go cook up some fresh fish.

YEP THAT'S RIGHT...your cheat'n/break'n the law/going to get a ticket if you were use'n "BAIT" and members in here hate cheat'n...if you "KEPT" 5 fish(even if given away)your done..STOP!!!...if you were use'n bait or scent even if you had let them go they would have still counted as "your limit" for the day...sry....now next time if your use'n bait/scent and you stop KEEP'n at 4 fish ..and change to a spinner or something(with no scent on it) you could keep on fishing...good to hear you had fun tho...GL....DOG

Ya have to make out a note stating that you gave them your fish, sign it, and give the note to the person you gave the fish to.

The note has to state where and when you caught the fish, and what specie of fish they are. The note has to have YOUR name, phone number, maybe address, on it. And maybe your fishing license number, I forget what all she said when I called early last year.

Yea, that's the way it works, and the fish I'm pretty sure goes on your limit. I always thought that it was wierd that when you're on a boat, you can share limits, but not when you're a group on shore. Giving away fish can be a hassle.

@ Camron: The best way to do C&R fishing for trout is to catch four on bait, and then for your fifth use lures so that you can keep fishing as much as you want. It's really important to read and understand the regulations for each body of water that you visit, because they are there to #1 protect a limited resource and #2 confuse anglers into disregarding them and become a source of ticket revenue for the general fund. Some tickets come with a very hefty price tag, and can result in warrants and other legal hassles if not paid. So if not just for a selfish bit of self preservation, but for the altruistic goal of maintaining our fisheries for our children and grandchildren.

But yes, when fishing with BAIT once you reach the limit, you're done fishing, whether you kept them, gave them away or released them. When a fish takes bait often times they can be hooked in the gill, stomach and throat, and although they may seem fine, many planted trout will not survive unless handled with great care. The rule is designed to keep fish alive and around for everyone else to catch. Especially the planted trout right after planting, these small 4.5/lbs. fish are very likely to die after being caught on powerbait rigs. It's very important that you don't break the law.

Not doing anything while waiting for the pizza to digest so I decided to look it up.

2010-2011 regs, page 20, center column, 3rd paragraph. No I'm not going to type it all, yes you need to have your address in the note. Enclude county, area, where the fish was taken. And of course the signature of the person who caught/harvested the fish.

The part about giving the fish away is somewhere between pages 20 or 22 as I recall. At Ballinger it's a $500.00 wallet lightener too if caught.

My question is what happens however if somebody basically takes the fish away from you when your intent was to catch and release and that persons understanding of English is limited at best? I had that happen to me the other day. I was like woooooo I was gonna c/r it miss. I had no pen no paper no way to give her a note and she walked off with the little thing.

Oh and be carefull on the C/R and feeding the wild life.

I was at Ballinger a couple days ago. Somebody did a C/R which turned into a (possible)feed the Eagle thing and some guy went nuts that he (the guy that caught it just wasted state resources).... I looked at the guy going dude the Eagle would have gotten a fish anyways (they were surfacing all over the place)and we can't be absolutely sure he got the C/R'd fish.

The way the guy was going off I'm sure he wanted to see the eagles long form proof of birth papers as well :D Long story short the only nuts I want come in a can or glass jar :D

Not to bust chops here, but just because the regs are confusing, doesnt excuse anyone from not knowing them. There is a phone number in there to call if you have any questions. There are also email addresses and threads on this site. Like I said earlier, the game wardons do not care if they were confusing, they will still gladly write you a ticket.

Just so it's clear, when trout fishing with bait in WA, all trout caught, whether kept or released, count toward the daily legal limit. That's why some suggest you catch 4 with bait, and then switch to non-scented, non-baited artificial lures until you retain your last trout.

Honestly, if you want to catch and release, you should do that first, then switch to bait if you want to take a limit home. And yes, a daily limit is all that may be caught in one day, that's why it's called a daily limit. Therefore, you cannot give away your limit of trout and continue to fish for trout on the same day.

There is also a possession limit, which is two daily limits in any form and that's all you are allowed to have in your possession while "in the field". This applies to all game fish, not just trout.

There is no "sharing limits" on a boat either, it's 5 trout per person caught or released when fishing with bait. If you "help" someone else in the boat catch their limit after you have legally met the limit, you are breaking the law. From the 2010 Sport Regs Pamphlet, under the heading You May Not, "Harvest any part of another person’s daily limit, except for persons who possess a Designated Harvester Card."

Under the same heading of You May Not, "Possess another person’s game fish unless it is accompanied by a statement showing the name, address, license number, date, county, and area where it was taken, and the signature of the angler who harvested it." So, yes, the person you give your fish to can indeed get in trouble if you haven't provided them with a statement as required.

When my wife and I are on the lake do I stop fishing after I've caught my limit and she hasn't or the same other way around? You bet. We both have the two pole endorsements, so we fish with 4 poles in the water. When either of us has caught our limit, two rods get put away. I don't just talk about the rules, we follow them too.
