Mayfield Lake marginally fishable now

I ran down to Mayfield Lake this week, and didn't tell anyone I was going because I wanted some "alone" time. The lake is in marginal condition -- water temps are still below 60 degrees on cloudy days, and the water is turbid with visibility of only 5 or 6 feet -- but I saw several (mostly small) tiger muskies on shoreline cover and larger trees, and caught and released a 42-incher. What muskie anglers need right now is sunny weather to warm the water. I recommend using small lures at this time.

Congrats on the 42 Don. You didn't get it on your secret bait did ya? The one you told everyone not to buy?

No, I got it on a pike-size Peterson Tackle Co. Inhaler, black hair and nickel blade. Another angler caught a 30-incher on a bass plug, which I netted and unhooked for him. Keep in mind they're feeding on small prey -- squawfish and sucker fry -- this time of year. A Mepps Musky Killer is about the right size.
