fly rod musky

My goal this year is to take a 40" or larger tiger musky on the fly.
I have been tying all winter long large 4-8" long streamers, deceivers and sliders to make my attempt at a big boy.

My first long trip for 5 days will be Curlew lake up by Republic WA in the late part of June.

If anyone has any information to pass on about lake Curlew, I would appreciate it.

I will be fishing Silver Lake near Medical before my trip, to get my back and arms in shape to be throwing a 9-10 weight all day before the trip.

So anyone that wants to join me at silver is more then welcome. I have a 14' aluminum boat with a 20hp and an electric up front to get the job done.

Lets share ideas.

Kevin, PM me and maybe we can hook up on Silver. I have spent 20 hours on Silver so far this year, and plan on hitting it much more. Just a side note, fly fishing won't pay too many dividends currently, but once the water warms a bit I can see it working very well. All of the fish I have seen and the one I took were in 25+ feet of water. That will change as the water warms.

Dougw makes a great point, this time of year the waters of Silver Lake are still cool. Try flyfishing with your shooting head and get down deep quickly. If your muscles and endurance are in good shape go full sink. I'd love to see some of those flies. I've flyfished Silver for Tiger Muskie several times, several follows but no takes. They are curious and a good perch imitation might well do the trick. Make absolutly sure you use a trailor hook!!!!! Yes I learned the hard way on Mayfield Res. with a 40" Tiger. Wish I could be there Kevin but Dougw knows his stuff, ask for a ride in the USS Pend Oreille.

I will be out there tomorrow morning, till about noon. Have other obligations in the afternoon. The USS Pend Oreille is shaping up sparky. She cruises now at 25+mph with the new motor!

It may be a bit early for the Tigers to be in the shallower water. Here are a couple of reports I submitted in '08 when we went for them with fly rods.

deepbuzzer, You are right on the mark. I think we have a great forum here with good people. My take on the tigers is this.... The more people that catch them and see how much fun they are, the more support they will get! WDFW needs support to continue such a good program. I am always willing to at least inform people where and how to catch them to help further that support. Many times if I can, I will even help people out. Long live the tigers in Washington State!
