Canyon Creek Hatchery Steelhead

Post by snoco » Sat Nov 23, 2013 3:53 pm

Anyone ever caught one? I have fished Canyon Creek above Granite Falls for years and I have only caught natives. They're fun to catch, but I would like to catch something I can bring home for a change.

Seeing that the WDFW has quit stocking Canyon Creek with any kind of hatchery fish, I would say your odds have gone from bad to worse. Canyon Creek used to get both summer and winter fish planted, then they went to just summer for a few years, and now for the past four or five years have ceased entirely. A number of fortson fish do go up the south fork, later running back down river and going up the north... but as for Canyon Creek, you are looking for a needle in a haystack. Even when they planted the creek, I never caught one, and I have fished it for years.

If you're looking for hatchery steelhead, you would have better luck fishing a stream that gets planted with them.

Which reminds me to ask: Is there a list on WDFW that shows which hatchery plants which species?

See here:http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/plants/steelhead/. Last time canyon creek was stocked was 2009 for summer runs. If you havent heard, wdfw got sued by the Wild Steelhead Conservancy and will not stock any puget sound streams except the skykomish for the next 10 years the way i understand it. I caught one a few years back but didnt pay attention to the fin, just released it. We kinda gave up on it and started fishing the N.fork since it gets alot more fish. The fish are so far and between we just release all steelhead now even hatchery fish.

I found the article on wdfw. Its no steelhead released into the skagit for 12 years, and no steelhead released into other puget sound streams except the sky until the right paperwork is in place i guess.
