Where to Steelhead/Chinook fish in Eastern WA in middle of Sept??

Post by jbball50 » Fri Sep 03, 2010 4:59 pm

So my dad's going to be coming over for the weekend of the 17th and were trying to go fishing for Chinook or steelhead on the river from a boat. I'm in Kennewick and I know of the big kings up at Hanford Reach around that time. Are there other areas that would be productive fishing areas for either chinook or steelhead during this time that's an hour to an hour and a half away? Never fished here for kings/steelhead so kind of clueless on where to go during this time of the year.

You could try above McNary Dam on the Columbia, my brother has been there a few times and seen a few fish jumping and rolling. Give it a try hopefully the water is cooling down so they will start biting.
I'm heading there in two week's myself, maybe will see you there.
Keep your line tight.

above Ice harbor dam, from what i've been told the snake is a little cooler in water temps than the columbia. McNary is good too.

Thanks for the heads up, yeah if I fished on the Snake I'd probably give the Tucannon area a try, not sure if it would be too early for that area for steelhead though. Seems like Mcnary might be the better bet for when he's up here, just have to wait and see from the dam counts though. Do they fish directly above the Mcnary Dam or just throughout the system? Also what's the best depths to concentrate on for the steelhead in that area above Mcnary? If we end up trying for steelhead there, probably just going to do the bobber and shrimp thing and maybe pull some lighted plugs if we fish during the night.
