Re: Sea Lions Killed!!
I think the argument is, because humans put up dams and caused the situation of fish being herded into spots and unable to escape, that sealions have adapted to a food source being easily available. Hence "need" - maybe a better way of putting it is humans created the opportunity for the sealions. But that doesn't absolve us from dealing with the issue, otherwise the end result is the destruction of genetic runs of fish as occured at the Ballard locks.

So my question to you is, why ask about the "need" of the sea lions to swim up the Columbia? They don't "NEED" to swim up the Columbia, they just do. In so doing they are endangering specific salmon returns. So the sea lions "NEED" to be eliminated on the Columbia.

I don't think I said they need to swim up the Columbia. Your right they just do... And I would assume that where ever they are coming from there is probably a shortage of food for them.... I wonder why?
And as far as endangering a specific salmon......you really think sea lions are the main problem? I wonder why we have such s....y returns to begin with? I think I have a clue.... So the sea lions are why we have to have hatcherys and plant fish in the rivers? I think there are more reasons why we have low fish returns then sea lions. Maybe over fishing back in the day? Maybe people using nets strung out across the entire river? I do agree something needs to be done but always complaing about some like this is just pretty redundant...
It's like cutting down the forest for more homes and then complaing about the mountain lions or bears coming into your back yard... And then they end up being killed because of public safety. Just makes no sense.
Yes I hunt and I fish but think some things are just ridiculous that we complain about. I think we need to find out the root of the problem and fix that instead of just putting on a band-aid
EDIT: NO SWEARING!!!

Re: Sea Lions Killed!!
Yes, they single handedly wiped out all steelhead and king salmon from the Cedar watershed. The only reason the Sammamish runs have fish are shear numbers add by the hatchery. Personally I would be be more interested catching hatchery raised fish than feeding sea lions with them. Better use of my tax and license money.
I say, the dollar solution for all sea lions in the columbia and PS. When I see them chomping fish at Sultan I just go home.

Re: Sea Lions Killed!!
To make things clear to all. There are Sea-lions, Stellar seals, harbor seals and so on. Stellars and harbor seals are smaller seals with less of an appetite. Sea lions range from 500-1200 lbs. Their appetite is even more. these are not lil cute seals were talking about. They are not only dangerous to the fish but to humans also. Ive seen them chase humans off the beaches especially up at Bush and Lagoon points. I was chased by one to my truck. All I had on me was a 25 semi auto which would only make them mad.
I feel the real blame should be to our govt which makes a fish ladder so small that the fish congregate at the opening waiting their turn to enter. At that point its like a buffet for the sea lions. Untill we change the structures you can shoot hundred of sea lions and its really gonna do nothing to change it. Thats what happened at the Cedar too. I know cuz I fished the locks for years and watched it happen. We as humans are to blame.

Yes, back in my fish buying days in San Fran and Sausalito we were regularly attacked by Sealions. They are extremely territorial and aggressive. I would rather get in the water with the great whites than sea lions, period.racfish wrote:To make things clear to all. There are Sea-lions, Stellar seals, harbor seals and so on. LOL I shared that on facebook! LOL Good spot for it..........here.fishenfreak wrote:kill them ALL
To the other guy, you did use the word need, being in a mood of late, I unfairly targeted your post. It's not an attack on you personally though.
I, probably most on here, agree that more needs to be done about various things that have to do with their prospective fishery. Poaching is a good example...... String them up by their thumbs and give them a good old fashioned public flogging! Well, that isn't going to happen so, since the science has shown the states and the feds that some sea lions should be killed, I for one am going to rejoice! I'm not alone.
Now is a great time to enjoy the fact that they are finally going to eliminate some sea lions.... Enjoy the party! Don't pee on it... is that acceptable language? LOL

Re: Sea Lions Killed!!
The authorities are only allowed to euthanize California sea lions when their population exceeds past sustainable levels. And majority of sea lions found so far inland are males. The sea lions are supposed to migrate just like the terns and cormorants, but they all have figured out that the Columbia provides food year round, and no longer need to migrate. Its a tough problem.

that's why we need to take them all out
