Re: Fur or Marabou?
Jigs have their place, and I honestly have had more success on jigs.... But that's probably cuz I fish jigs more than bait

I can say the same exact thing using jigs. Each river presents a different challenge and every hole a certain method works better than others. But the majority of Steelhead I have caught have come by way of the Jig. Bobberdown!!fishenfreak wrote:dont get me wrong jigs are great. but i have NEVER in my entire life been standing next to a jig fisherman and been outfished by them while i was using eggs. NEVER! once during coho season a guy had a small jig and huge shrimp on the jig, he caught more than me, but thats practically just bait. ive never been outfished by a jig on steelhead in years, although they do work.
If I took you to some spots that I fish, I guarantee you will be putting on a jig.
But I have been pondering if I were only able to fish 1 method. 1 method to fish for Steel. Just 1. I would fish a Pink Worm.

yeah jens, ive been meaning to ask you because you catch alot of fish on jigs. when do you choose to fish a jig versus bait? Im like ff in the sense that eggs and shrimp have always been the ticket. and when you do fish jigs, do you have better success with a bare jig or some scent or bait on it? my reason for using eggs especially is that once they get it in their mouth they don't want to let go, therefore I hardly ever miss a fish on bait, and its what they would eat naturally in a river.

veryy interesting. i wouldnt think that jigs would outfish natural smelly bait, but when your an expert at what you do, as in your jig fishing, its gonna be the ticket!
It would be interesting for me to fish side by side with you in your rivers using my technique and see what happens, and same for in my rivers like cascade. Probably each just slay the hell out of them
about the pink worm. I agree that it is the go-to lure in some cases, expecially in bait-ban rivers. have u noticed it catch a lot of smaller fish, or tend to focus on slabs?

Expert? LOL No one here is an expert . The only angler on here that I would say has the most expert unique technique is slayerthat . He fishes a 30 ft leader and will hook more fish than you, than your buddy . Than all of us combinedfishenfreak wrote:jens wrote: I can say the same exact thing using jigs. I am using a Pink Worm because I lost a trophy on one earlier this year. Keeps me from my 8 hours of sleep.

Re: Fur or Marabou?
oh and your right Jens, my rule is that my leader MUST be as many times as long as my pole as the size of fish i wanna catch. Going for a 20 pound steelhead? Gotta have a leader 20 times as long as my pole. And set the hook 20 times per cast. Only way to really get the trophies :/ All about consistancy. If your a little off your just not gonna get one. Plain and simple. LOLOLOL Joking by the way if it wasnt obvious enough
Just read an article in the new STS magazine about a guy whos caught 9077 steelies. THATS a slayer.

Re: Fur or Marabou?
BOBBER DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man kockmando and I fished all morning at cascade, went 1 for 4 in the first hole we fished at frist light with eggs. Moved upriver, fished a run with a lot of steelies rolling and swimming around, but they just wouldnt bite!! Something i never do is fish a jig... WELL my buddy puts a jig on, within 5 minutes BOOM HUGE 15lb hen steelhead. then, 5 minutes later BOOBER DOWN AGAIN 5 lb buck released him. 10 minutes later BOOM I get a takedown on a jig miss it. 5 minutes later my buddy misses one. 5 more minutes BOOM 12 lb hen my buddy keeps. I proceed to catch 6 coho and miss one more steelhead i can see flashing in a half hour, and we call it quits. Fished eggs for 2 hours in the same spot, and the second we switched to shrimp tipped jigs. BOBBER DOWNS OFF THE HOOK. gotta admit i never had faith in em, you know they got a spot in my tackle box now!!! go to steelhead picture forum for the picture of these huge steelhead caught on jigs today. should be posted tonight or tomorrow morning!

Re: Fur or Marabou?
Let me pause briefly while I wipe my tears of happiness....
Way to go!! Way to fricken go! I know, I know, every method has it's place and with every method an angler just falls in love with a certain technique. There is something about watching your float dance on the surface.. and then it's gone...
Good for you guys, seriously, makes my day reading your story.

Sweet!! yea its super nice to not be ticking bottom like we usually do. EVERY bobber down is a fish on, so exciting!!! water was too blown out today, caught a few on huge egg clumps. But when it drops back, its jig time baby!

Re: Fur or Marabou?
OK this is getting ridiculous!!! Jens you'll appreciate this agian. Water SUPER high today. only fishable area was hatchery stream holes. fished early in the 2nd hole down, got one on eggs. Went up after no bites, saw LITERALLY 30 or more steelhead sitting at first fishable hole. threw eggs, shrimp for a hour. NO BITES. put a jig on........ BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM 4 for 6 in 45 minutes. no bait even on jig. Plain jig purple and pink beau mac in the smallest size ill post a picture. landed 12lb hen 8lb hen 6lb buck 5lb hen. broke one off onthe hookset. leader so short i watched every steelhead come up and eat, and broke one off cause i got too excited. lost another 2 feet from the bank. man i am seriously falling in love with jigs. Im using them hella from now on!!!

Re: Fur or Marabou?
Went 1/2 on that Red Jig I tied it's the one in the upper left corner in the pic I posted above a couple of posts. Was my first steely to the shore on float and jig, first on a jig I tied, and first on a rod I bought specifically for float fishing. So I was pretty happy with that today. I went 2/5 total on the day.
