No meat stick from me. I go light weight. 9'6" lami cert pro and a small low pro baitcaster. Its a medium rod 8-12lb test rated. I get 20lb plus kings out with it just fine. I know the types of people that you speak of with the meat sticks, the pier poles etc.... definately not me. And if it was a braid snag you got on its because they are using braid main straight to the hook no swivel no leader. Leader will always give on my set ups. I can use the same swivel for up to 15 trips on one of em. I usually cut and retie before I get to that point. But Fished alot of days straight on the cow this summer camping out.
More fish please!

I will give the full story tomorrow with pics of my rod that broke twice on the same fish. I will not be using that rods for kings again when I get the new one. Going back to my meat stick. :-({|=

I did get to bring home a fish though.

Scott, I was fishing at the skoke this year and my uncle broke his rod in half due to a fish, its how he fought the fish though-He held his rod straight up, and he horsed the fish- he still caught the fish though but after he caught the fish he looked at his rod and said rookie mistake-iots how he faught ths fish so tats why his line give before the rod did.

~My biggest worry is that my wife (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it.

Boy you must have horsed it or had too heavy of line on, cause I've caught a few lings over three feet on a trout rod with 10lb mono while fishing rockfish in the shallows. They come out of the rcok pile and grab the rockfish as it's coming in. Now that's fun! if anything they just cut the line on the rocks.
You just have to play the fish, not horse em in.

I've also caught a carp over 10lbs on an ultra light rod with 2lb line. You really don't need line heavier than your rods rating. Just a bit of patience.

hmm odd. Line should generally snap before a rod does, even a cheapy unless there's a nick or damage to the rod.
But I guess it's all already been said.:geek:

Yup. I use braid and floro. I change it up depending on the situation and the type of fishing I'm doing. Lately it's 15 # floro on the baitcaster. 12# mono for leader. No meatsticks here! Sorry to hear about your rod there scott. At least it had a warranty though.

G-Man wrote:I'm guessing that the issue is "the guy" who uses 50lb braid in the river and then proceeds to break off 100' of it after getting it wrapped up on a log or some other snag. The last thing you want to do is suck some heavy rated braid up the intake of your pump or be snagging up on it during a drift. Any of the braid I use for fishing rivers is not rated higher that 15lbs and then I use a lighter weight mono leader. The majority of folks who fish braid do the same so please don't lump us together with the snaggers and rest of the cretins who could give a rip about what they do to the enviornment.
Well said. :salut:

I consistantly fish 40lb braid and 20lb mono/flouro leader. I've NEVER lost any of my mainline, the 40lb braid, so yeah, keep your comments reserved for the idiots that use braid all the way to the hook. It's not a problem with what's being used, it's a problem with who's using it.

whats a meat stick? I am guessing its a heavy rated pole rated between 20-30 pounds. Is it frowned upon to use that type of gear with braid?

Its just USUALLY a big rookie red flag, when somebody comes out with a heavy rod and heavy braid. when I have a lami noodle rod and 10 or 12 pound test I pray the dude with no waders a heavy Walmart rod and braid doesn't fish next to me. That's why I try to stay away from the puyullup.

not just a rookie but also snagers. Anyone ever see a person climb a tree to spot fish and then try to snag fish 12 feet off the water in a tree. If is fun to watch it funny when they think they are going to be able to get the fish in and then fall and catch them selfs and lose there rod.... bye, bye rod.

Meat sticks are the rods most peeps use on Tokul Creek and at the Barrier Dam area on the Cow.In the old Allentown days of the 70's meat sticks were popular. We used to use the old Eagle Claw yellow mooching rods with Penn 109's. Casting those with a 6-8 oz weight w/ double spin glo leaders was fun.On rivers like Tokul where theres no running room for steelies is why they use meat sticks there.Ive said this alot lately but I'm still stuck on the Ugly Sticks for abusive or (combat) style fishing.
When youre up to your rear end in alligators, its hard to remember that the initial plan was to drain the swamp.
