whatcom creek
with all the closures it looks like whatcom is the closest place for me to get my line stretched. anybody seeing the doggies yet?
Fishing relaxes me. It's like yoga, except i still get to kill something.
Re: whatcom creek
Ive heard this place is a zoo when the chums get in, complete with snaggers litter etc. I havent been there before, is this true? Is it as bad as rumor has it?im considering it, but I dont want to end up at a snag show. Or, is there any part of it that is away from crowds? Thanks.

Re: whatcom creek
its not a pretty scene at the wall. if you fish downstream of there its fairly empty of people. i usually run either a float & jig or toss a spinner without any problems. it's the wall that gives the crick a bad image.

Re: whatcom creek
I agree with spokey, just stay away from the wall and it isn't bad. It is kind of funny watching some of the people on the wall snag and then act like they are such a boss while hauling their fish in backwards. Keep in mind though, you actually can snag fish from the wall and then put them in the hatchery deposit pipe. So when you see a ton of snagged fish brought out of the water, don't freak out too much.
Re: whatcom creek
Float and jig away from the wall kills it.

Re: whatcom creek
Legal snagging !?!?!? Yep ill have to be sure to stay far from the wall then. Ill float a jig or use blue fox down river..

River... That's funny. Its literally a football field from the salt to the falls. Im not even sure it ever turns from salt to fresh water. More of a creek haha. But ya Blue Fox or jig away from the idiots.

In the 70's it was a great place to fish after work. Never more than a couple of my fishing buddies. Casting Blue Foxes.DannyL wrote:River... That's funny. Re: whatcom creek
I have fished this spot for a few years, I used to attend WWU. I have had a hobo steal my box there before (luckily i only had corkie set ups in it) Im pretty sure You have to have a liter on your line to fish there. and it is a **** show on the wall. i have seen fights and lives threatened there. It is certainly fun to catch those big ol chum. and sometime people will pull stealhead out of there. Last year i went about half a dozen times and a police officer hungout there for hours each time, which made me feel alot more comfortable. but yes bring waders and go to the other side of the river from the wall and its alot better. i usually fish the end of the wall and do good. Just remember to try and be polite, even if those around you are rude. Keep an eye on your gear! lots of hobos. Ill prob start going up there as well. Goodluck walking the dogs!
Re: whatcom creek
My brother volunteers there spawning the chum at the hatchery. I've never fished it (might this year), but he said it's a zoo right at the hatchery. At the wall it's 90% snagged vs 10% caught. He said it's like musical chairs when someone gets a fish on.
Re: whatcom creek
No signs of fish as of Tuesday, although it seems that the baby seal is back (now he looks like a teenager). Hopefully the fish show up soon. My office is a few blocks away so this is an easy one for me. For those of you fishing jigs and blue foxes - do the seals turn off the bite? A few seals were parked there all season last year.
Re: whatcom creek
sometimes that'll kill the bite, kinda depends if the fish are close in and whether the seals are keyed in on hooked fish or not. i'm usually more concerned about losing fish to seals than whether i'll get a bite (there usually a few overly aggressive chums around).

Re: whatcom creek
Checked it out this weekend. Water is very very low and there was not one fish in site. This rain might bring them in within a week or two.

Re: whatcom creek
place is a absolute nightmare... but its well worth it for easily hooking 50+ fish in a day... but if you cant deal with the crowds bring waders and fish across from the wall or downstream theres a few accesses...
