Norman Hole on the Stilly. No Trespassing?

Post by Matt » Tue Oct 06, 2015 8:15 am

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this for me. I ran into a (seemingly) new No Trespassing sign on Saturday morning fishing the Stilly... never seen it there before right on the gate at the Norman Hole. I was just checking the reports section and saw someone else mentioning that "new" sign as well. Can anyone confirm that access is or is not allowed at the Norman Road gate?

I know it is private property, and the access was granted by the farmer with the exception of not walking on his croplands and grass.... Is this another case of people trashing the river and losing a once great fishing opportunity/spot?

Needless to say I didn't risk it Saturday and drove to a different Silvanna spot. One other truck was parked at the gate, so "someone" went in.

I fished the Normal hole a couple weeks ago and there were quite a bit of people fishing there. There was no sign that I saw when i Was there. This would be the third old time spot of mine with new signs if true. i will be checking it out. I think they do it to discourage people who use river spots to hangout and trash the rivers but i am not sure.
Im not going to say to go past the no trespassing signs, but if you are respectful and walk on the path i dont see it being a big deal. I just posted a comment on the last Stilly report as well on the no trespassing areas.
Wish i could help more. Ive been going to these spots for years and might be researching on how to get a hold of landowners to ask permission.
Good luck out there!

I saw a couple cars parked at the gate this morning on my way to work. Seems people are still fishing out there. I would talk to the land owner but I am also thinking if you stay on the path and out of his fields youll be just fine.

I talked to the land owner a couple weeks ago. There is no more access. They were having break ins to the houses in the area and it really spooked the neighborhood. He was really nice and apologetic that he had to close it.

If a land owner wants to close access that's their right. But I'm not seeing a bunch of burglaries in the area over the last couple of months. Yet another good access point lost.

Losing that big spot will really displace a lot of folks to other, smaller areas in the lower river. That spot could easily accommodate 20-40 guys.

I'll play devils advocate: I know at least 1 of the "Houses in the area" is filled with some pretty "unsavory" types.... maybe the problem isn't from outside the community....

*ahem*
