Advise needed please

Post by ragibby » Mon Jun 30, 2014 9:38 am

Can someone please lend a helping hand and give me some advise.

I've been fishing on the sky and haven't gotten a fish all summer. I have been watching others and asking for advise down on the river but still nothing. The worst part is people around me are catching fish. Not many but some are. I really want to hook into a fish soon. I've been floating artificial eggs, beads, tons of different jig patterns(I tie my own), shimp, yarnies, you name it I've tried it. Not to mention I've been tryin drift fishing which isn't my favorite way to fish but if the floats not producing then I've gotta try something else bit that didn't work for me either. I've also thrown spoons and spinners with the same result.

Can one of you guys please give me some advise. I'm not picky with species at this point. Anything tht swims will do.

Thanks in advance. Good luck out there

Don't give up. What kind of leader material are you using? If your using mono, I suggest trying some 6-8lb Berkley Fluorocarbon. Ive had mono and fluorocarbon side by side in a clear stream, and the mono turns into a clearly visible white line, while the fluorocarbon is invisible. Seemed to help me out on the Stilly. Not sure about the Sky summer runs, but on the Stilly my go to winter steelhead rig is float fishing a dime size pink spawn sack (cured using sugar/ borax is best) tied on a 2' fluorocarbon leader with a small split shot crimped in the center of the leader. For summer cutthroat trout and steelhead (S.Fork Stilly/ Canyon Creek), I've had good luck with a small homemade #2 or #3 black blade/ brass body spinner when the waters running clear. When float fishing, target slow walking pace water and look for current seams to cast into and remember to keep the eggs or jigs above their heads since they cant look down. I usually keep adjusting my bobber stop until the float tilts/ jig hits bottom, then bring the bobber stop down about 1-2' so the offering is off the bottom. When the waters clear and low, I've had best luck targeting faster moving shallow water that has a choppy surface using the small spinners. Like I said, I don't fish the Sky, but these tips work on the Stilly. Hope it helps.

Sounds like are are doing all the right things. Sometimes it just comes own to plain old luck and time on the water.

That's fishing.

I didn't hook up at all my 1st season and that was going every weekend (about 10-15 trips). Here it is many years later and this summer I've only been able to hit the river 3 times and came home empty handed two of those (not even a bump). That 3rd trip I used the same exact gear, tactics and fished the same holes as the other two and went 4 for 4 with a nate, dolly (both released) and two brats in just a few hours and only saw one other guy with a fish that morning.

Enjoy the fact that you are able to get out, watch others and keep at it. Before you know it you'll be looking for more freezer space [thumbup]

That's fishing at its best. Keep at it. Cover water.

The only sound advice is keep working the water. I get frustrated but move around and scout the water for holes where "something" might be holding up. I was taught be be a technician about the water and have several tools as back up if one doesn't work. also, fresh bait( if you use it).

Keep at it. Stick with 1 thing that you know works. I'd go with a small nightmare pattern jig. Bring a drift rod. Fish the same spots. Switch it up a little, sometimes use shrimp scent, sometimes use a prawn or sand shrimp, but fish the same jig. Find the bottom with your jig, raise it up a a foot, fish that line. If you fish another, find the bottom, pull it up a foot and fish it. Always find the bottom and fish it up a foot. Set the hook whenever your float stays down, even if you think it's the bottom.

The reason I say fish what works and stick to it is because where you're fishing, you're simply waiting for a fish to move into the spot that you're standing in front of. It's a matter of enough fish to go around, so up there it's a gamble. Don't stand on top of them, keep your bobber on top of the water when you reel in, and check out some of the summer run tips I have on my blog, you will get one.

Set the hook. Set it hard. If you learn one thing, set the hook so that your bobber is in the trees behind you if it's not a fish. That's the goal. Your drag will make sure your line doesn't break, but you want every ounce of power you can get shoving your hook into whatever bites. The other day we had a small trou fly into the boat because he got greedy and tried to steel a steelhead's lunch.
