Sockeye on the Skagit: 2014

Hey everyone. So I'm starting up a new thread for Sockeye on the Skagit for the 2014 season, seeing as the only other thread was sort of devoted to gear.

I got out and fished the Skagit this morning with a couple of friends from about 4:15am to 9am. We were using the classic plunking setup with mainly pink, glow, chartreuse and orange Spin'N'Glows in size 4 and 6. We combined those with storebought prawns and cured coon shrimp. We were plunking by the railroad trestle in Mt. Vernon and had some suspicious taps, but no fish. We didn't see or hear anyone else having luck while we were there either.

Anyone get any fish today, and or have tips and advice to offer? I'm planning on hitting the short two week season pretty hard. I want to get some Sockeye!

Pretty rough fishing today. Was upriver from you a little ways, plunking as well. Between a buddy and I we went 1/2. I think the run is just starting to trickle in, should get a little better everyday. I'm going back tomorrow. I live close and I've fished this run when it gets good. The only way to get em is to put in the effort. Good luck!

Fished am and pm pipeline in sedro no luck either,river was in good shape just a matter of time. Plunkin Sand shrimp pink tiger spin n glo with piece of krill oil soaked yarn

Nice, I'm glad to hear someone had luck, and good to know that things should pick up. Someone I talked with today said that they had heard reports of activity down near the mouth of the river, but that no fish had been seen up at the Baker dam.

On another note, do you tend to find that the fish really bury the hook, or bite light, or just a mix of everything?

Was at Youngs Bar for the opener and saw one caught.

Sometimes they just hammer it and hook themselves, but more often they hit it a few times and are gone. Be prepared to make a good set. Contrary to what someone told you. There are fish at the dam, not very many, but as of yesterday they had 3 there. Prior to this year the earliest they have ever had fish at the dam was the 17th, do this is good news. Stick with it, pulling sockeye from a river in the US is a rare thing, so stick with it. If you put in the effort, you will catch fish.

Yep, you have to put in your time. All it takes is one good school to come by.

Beautiful Sockeye you got there! Still need to get that off my bucket list. Don't think a Lake Washington season is ever going to happen.

I was all depressed sittin at work lookin at that pic. Then the wife said I can go out in the afternoon and I rewarded her with a nice sockeye to throw onto the bbq tomorrow

I'm excited, going to give it a try on Monday. Didn't fish the river last year, looking forward to learning this fishery. We'll be sure to share information with everyone.

Fished the river once two years ago for sockeye without any luck. Going to give it another try tomorrow. Pumping some fresh sand shrimp later on today.
