What is the proper way to use a Dick Nite?

Post by caseyweed » Tue Oct 02, 2007 9:57 am

I see the illustration on their website, but I don't quite get it. I have it with the sliding drop weight and about a 3' leader. Now do you cast it and just let it coast down the river or do you start to retrieve it after it sinks for a few seconds. I'm fishing from shore if that makes a difference.

Hey Caseyweed,

I did not know much about the whole Dick Nite thing, BUT there are threads on this River Fishing forum:
"Working A Spoon"
"leaders and droppers rule of thumb"

that have given me a better understanding of just how to work that Dick Nite or a spoon. You should check them out and if nothing else they may prompt more questions. I find it is much better to have questions in front of the computer where I can get an answer than to have them on the water where I have to just guess what the best thing would be to do and maybe not catch as many fish.
Hope that helps,
Lewis

It sounds to me that you have the right setup as per what you described. The proper way to work a Dick Nite is to cast it out slightly upstream (depending on current speed) and as it drfts down stream, reel it slowly back (don't just drift it). Wait until the weight hits bottom then reel slow and steady. Dick Nites will out produce all other lures for silvers in the river if presented properly.

Oh, by the way I use a half ounce bank or ball sinker with about an 8" dropper.

What size dick nite? I have a few #2's and #1's. Is color dependant on water and sky conditions?

I don't really pay to much attention as to what size (i.e. number). I just know that the "Wee" size is the smallest size they make and I use that size and the next size up for silvers and humpies. The 50/50 color that I mentioned is the best all around color for any condition, unless the river is blown out (unfishable) or real dirty then it is better to use eggs. Other colors will work, but 50/50 is the best. I can check on some of my unopened Dick Nites and check exactly what size they are if you would like.

I'm pretty new to the whole salmon fishing thing but I use a snap swivel tied to my main line where I can then attach a slinky weight(3/4 to 1oz) with anywhere from a 2 to 5 foot leader. I have caught several fish that way. I would have to agree with the 50/50 being one of the most productive color as well.

Yea I worked at a tackle shop up until early september and we couldn't keep any pink or 50 50 dick nites in...Guys would come and see us restock the shelves and would pull em all off and buy them, somtimes as many as like 50 or 60

Oh yeah I have a question when using the WEE size do you use a snap swivel or tie the leader directly to the little ring? The bigger ones have an attached swivel so I was using a snap swivel for the 1s and 0s.

Nah stick away from the snap swivels and tie your leader right to that ring.

No problem. Everyone has questions when engaging in a new type of fishing and it always feels good to be able to help people out, because we all started from scratch and had questions at first...So it's nice to be able to return the favor...

Has anybody ever fished a dick nite under a float? For some reason I'm obsessed with float fishing.

Also, do you ever tip the hook on a Dick nite with a single egg?

I agree, Sam has also taught me many things as well.

I can't imagine that a Dick Nite could be float fished. It would just hang there and would have no action, but if it was pink and found its way in the face of some humpy's, it might get hits..

I've never tipped DN's either. Or any spoons for that matter. It takes away the action, so I have to use scents such as Smelly Jelly when using spoons...

Yeah I figured the action would be affected.

But what if you rigged the DN under a float in like a reverse bottom bouncing rig? go Bobber - egg weight - swivel - leader - DN. I supposed the float would drift too fast and get ahead of te DN not allowing it to get horizontal.....

The float would likely drift the same speed as the dick nite, thus being completely vertical and having no action...

I let the dick nite sink down for a three second count, then slowly retrieve it giving it a nice wobling action.
