I forgot about this thread - good info all! Thanks!

Over 90% of the steelhead i caught on the vedder this year were on one egg cure... which wasnt a cure at all. EVEN THO, these eggs fall off quite easily, i found that even if i had 3 different cures in my bag on a given day, the steelhead most days would only take eggs that i simply took out of a fish, put them on a cookie tray with borax to cover them completely, and let dry over night, and used the next day. Simply straight out of the fish, hardened and dried with nothing but borax. It seemed that the days when the steel were picky they wouldnt take my red borxofire cure or stuff like that. I was bobber fishing so they didnt fall off all the time, but i will admit they are pretty weak at staying on the hook. Just saying that a lot of fish this year likes straight eggs and borax, nothing more. Ive used these eggs side drifting before too, but the little hang ups make them fall off pretty easy, although a nice gravel or sandy bottom works well with them. lol

That is a cure, borax draws moisture from the egg changing it's natural state. I do use the natural borax cure and also have fished the egg driectly out of a fish. Some of my favorite steelhead cures are REALLY simple. Eggs borax, sugar and salt no color added to any of them. Steelhead love that natural orange color. On a interesting side note I caught a Coho hen on Sunday drifitng eggs, who when I cleaned her she was litterally FULL of cured eggs. I love people who say salmon won't eat eggs. :)

it is a misconseption, the fish will eat them both out of agression and for energy. yes they are dying as they are heading up the river but they are still living so the will eat.

You should try bear scent or seal saliva on your next batch of eggs. Or grind up some bear claw to get a nice powder and sprinkle that on your eggs. Go big or go home bro.

How in the heck do you get seal saliva. Do you go french kiss a seal? Or when you cap his head with a 357 does the drool come out? Bear claws are a good breakfast dessert. You a funny guy Jens. I would think its easier to get seal or bear pee or poop then saliva and claws. LOL

When youre up to your rear end in alligators, its hard to remember that the initial plan was to drain the swamp.

That ought to last a few seasons there Curado, get them in Jars or Vac packed and they will keep a lot longer. I fill my jars as full as they will possibly go with eggs, then add a dusting of borax on top to seal out the air.

I use plastic screw top jars (no glass to break on the river, or in the boat that way). Then I pack as many eggs as I can fit into the container, usually there is barely any air space left, then just pour some borax on top to seal up the remaining air pockets. When I go to use the bait I dust off the borax and use the eggs wet, I don't ad dry borax to my berries anymore, the milk out better without it I find.

Has any one fished pink eggs for kings and silvers?? I hear they are a decent egg to fish steel with but I am curing them up for fall chinook and silvers... Also I drop a lit match in my jar then cap it, I figure it burns off the oxygen?
