Right/Left Handed Retrieval

Post by Elisant » Sat Sep 27, 2008 2:38 pm

Hey guys,

Are all fly reels able to change from left to right handed retrieval?

I bought a new reel and it's setup for left-handed reeling, but I prefer right-handed.

Thanks!

Most reels these days are set up to change for L/R or R/L. Many of the older reels were not. What reel are you speaking of?
Sorry, I just ended my sentence with a preposition.
Where you go is less important than how you get there.

Hey Joe, thanks for the reply.

It's a cheap-o Martin reel - I think this is it http://www.martinfishing.com/catalog/MB_reels.html

It says Left or Right retrieve, I'm just not sure how to go about switching it.

You could do either of the following:
Send an e-mail to Martin and ask for the instructions on how to change it.
Take it to a fly shop and ask them.

It is most likely a small matter of taking the center disk out and flipping it over if it is a "click & pawl". That is what you do on a Pflueger Medalist.

Looks like you can just take the retreive handle off and the plug and reverse them. Says it is reversable.....Wait till Monday and call them. or just email them.

Fly Fishing is the art of attaching a fake bug to a line and relying on the appropriate manipulation of the rod to deceive the fish into eating a sharp steel hook covered with feathers and fur.

I went down to Outdoor Emporium near Safeco field and one of the helpful staff showed me how easy it is to reverse the retrieval of my new reel.

Once the spool was removed, the one screw holding the central gear to the back of the spool was removed and then gear was flipped over and screwed back in place.

Pretty simple!
