Northwest Fishing Reports

The weather is trying to warm up over here and this weekend I saw the first batch of mayfly's emerging. Also saw a goodly amount of trout taking something in the surface film.

Friday the fishing was a total skunk for me. Not even a strike. Saturday and Sunday were different. I fished little chironomids and got into fish. Caught 5 fish each day. Sunday was a good day if one counts misses. Besides the ones landed I also missed about 20 other fish. Saturday was overcast and the shiny chironomids worked excellent. Sunday was sunny and I couldn't get a fish to look at the shiny flies. I switched to more subdued colors and the fish started taking the flies.

I'll switch locations once the lakes open up March 1st. Some are open now and giving good results.

Bill, ya dirty dog, im jealous. Retirement sounds ruff! I am having my first week at the house in the woods. Only bummer is I have to go back to the trenches next Monday. Keep the posts coming!

Over the 14 or so trips to Rocky Ford since the first of the year the biggest trout was about 24 inches. I had a few in the 18 and up range. Usually get one or more in the 18 and up range each trip.

The "hot fly" is evolving as the weather warms. So far the successful flies have been: glo bugs in various sizes; olive mini-leeches, scuds ranging in size from small to tiny; a couple of different chironomid pupa patterns (usually small), a brassie, a pheasant tail nymph, and a skinny green bodied small scud that I selected because it was close to the color of the bwo's (blue wing olive) nymphs that were emerging.

The seep lakes open up over here on March 1st and should fish fairly good.
