Fly rod for kid's Christmas present

Post by p.t. » Thu Nov 18, 2010 7:10 pm

I'm thinking about buying a fly rod for my 11-year-old son as his Christmas present. Right now I've found several candidates: Orvis Streamline Outfitter ($198); Redington Pursuit Outfitter ($180); Scientific Anglers Trout combo ($95). They all come with rod, reel and line. The first two even have a carrying case. Cabela's website also has this Wind River Outfit, but there are 2 customer reviews saying basically the same thing: Rod broke after several uses! So I'm totally turned off.

Does anybody have experiences with these gear? Any comment? (Or maybe I should get a tennis rackquet for him, that should be a lot more affordable. :-)

Merry Christmas!

I know another 13 year old kid who would love a fly rod. Just buy him one and send it to 111 FishBait's Way !!! :geek:
~Men and fish are alike. They both get into trouble when they open their mouths.

~My biggest worry is that my wife (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it.

I have 2 or 3 I'll give away. If anyone wants, I'll look to see what they are and list the names, etc.

Also, the wind river combo that comes with just the rod and pre-spooled reel is the one I have, its the one that comes with all of those accessories that has bad reviews. Dont know why, I love it!

Amx, that's very generous of you! I'll take a number. Thanks, Santa.

nickbell, yeah, I don't understand either. The Wind River outfitter got very bad reviews, but the rod-reel combo doesn't. Weird.

Ok. My 3 extra rods;

#1 is LCI Striker II # SF866 8 1/2 foot 2 PIECE. line = #6 96% graphite

I'm gonna say excellent shape, almost like new.

#2 is Olympia - 4180 8 foot 2 piece.

I see no info on the weight, a bit whipier than the #1 rod, probably a #4.

Ok shape, dirty looking.

#3 is Sportfisher from Kmart, #940. 8 foot 2 piece.

No info on it either, but slightly whipier than #1, but not too close to #2.

Ok shape, not as dirty as #2.

I'll look up my extra reel, I'm sure I know where it's at. Got it. A Cortland with old #6 WF-6-F line on it for bass.

Ok, I'm out of bed, checked the yards for mole hills while letting the dog run around, made and am eating breakfast. Will check the PMs I have soon. :-)

I started out with the scientific anglers combo from cabela's and it was really quite decent for the price. I've never used a better rod than that, but it's a 5# and I've landed big carp on it which was really fun and it still held up. For the price it's worth it to me.
