Male makes the bed, you'll see him first. After the male and female spawn the male hangs and protects fry.
I read somewhere that the male will actually take a bite and scare the fry, making them more wary of predators.
Female leaves spawning area leaving male to deal with the fry.

Females might stay for a day or two, but thats about it, if you see one on the bed, both males and females are typically aggressive, except when they're actually spawning.

Sometimes the female will help make the bed, usually not.

Sometimes the female will protect the eggs, not that often, or for that long. As said, maybe a couple days. I don't know if any females will stick around long enough to protect the fry after they hatch.

Sometimes the male will take the fry into his mouth to protect them, that also depends on the specie of fish, I don't know which specie do, and which specie don't.

The male won't feed/eat while protecting the eggs or fry, usually.

After the parents leave the nest, all is fair game. Meaning the fry are on their own and if the parents come across the fry, the parents will eat them.

If there is a male on the bed, you can bet there other fish in the area. The male makes and takes care of the bed. He will also go find a female to mate with. He also chases off the other males and provides protection for the eggs and babies. The male does everything, while big mama is resting sun bathing and eating. Last week I saw a male on the bed with a female as plump as could be. She kept coming up to the bed and he would chase her off! Guess he wasn't ready yet.
