Just made my first batch of drop shot weights! Whatya guys think? Now that I know I can do it I will order more lead and swivels! They aren't the best but I am not picky with how my weights look!

Nice work bmd. Feels good to make your own stuff....huh? I haven't yet, but it would be fun...
. Pretty much you just got a mold and a melting pot, right??? I have heard of guys getting lead from old tires (balancing weights) and batteries so they don't have to buy it. Not sure if it's true, I have never tried it, that's just what my buddies say. Nice work again.....are you gonna paint and/or coat any of them??

Yeah it feels real good to make something you use all the time! I don't plan on using any old tire weights or anything, my instructions sounded like it would be better to use clean lead! Well I ordered the melting pot, the mold, and snap swivels. You will also need pliers, a file, goggles, and a mask! It was actually pretty fun! Not sure yet if I will paint/coat them. If you are interested I ordered from
www.barlowstackle.com but there are many other sites you can order do it molds! You can even check out
www.do-molds.com. I also watched a video or two that I found on you tube!

Those look pretty good. You gonna sell em' or just making them for yourself? I will say be careful using the lead. Not that you'd go out n out crazy with this but. In Tacoma last year a guy was making all kind of lead sinkers from little ones like you up to the downrigger ball sizes. Ended up being a Haz Mat and the neighbor hood was all infected with lead. Not trying to rain on your hobby at all, just saying..okay? Good luck, Todd

Thanks for the heads up muskyhunter! I plan on playing it pretty safe as I mentioned my safety equipment before! I don't plant on mass producing that much lead and wouldn't have any use for a one of the riggerdowner thingies you mentioned! And not sure my weights are pretty enough for anyone to want to buy off me anyway!

BMD, Been making downrigger weights for years, a little bigger but the same thing. A word to the wise if you didn't get any safety liturature with the molds and pot, lead is extremely poisonous and the vapor can readily enter your body through breathing. Not a good thing. Always smelt outdoors and wear an appropriate mask. That said if you need smelting material, hit up the local tire store, they'll sometimes give away the old wheel weights or sell them very cheap. Just scrape off the top of pot and you're good to go. The weights will be a little harder too. Oh I've cast a lot of bullets out old tire weights too. =)

Wearing eye proection is a MUST when you're playing with molten lead. Adequate ventilation is also critical. Simply opening the garage/shed door is not good enough. Air needs to FLOW from your melting pot to an unenclosed area (AKA outdoors) where the fumes can disperse safely. Using an average-sized box fan is a good way to make sure air is flowing.
Here's how I do it:
When your body absorbs lead, it makes you dumb(er). That's a fact.
Useless Trivia:
Did you know that the ancient Romans were victims of lead poisoning (among other things).
Here's just one of many interesting articles on the subject.
Romans & Lead
