Hi Everyone,
I’m really new to bass fishing and was wondering if any of you had an opinion on what worm sinkers are best to use, lead or tungsten?, and if tungsten, are they really worth the extra cost?

I use tungsten bullet weights and i used to use tungsten barrel weights for carolina rigs, only reason for the carolina rigs was that I was fishing some reservoirs with timber, needed something smaller.

Right now I use lead for my dropshots, tungsten for my bullet weights and brass for my caronlina rigs. I don't think I can afford tungsten for all three applications. It's not needed, but I would recommend it for bullet weights on texas rigs.

Do you think it just a myth that the smaller the weight the less visible it is to the fish, hence the use of tungsten compared to lead?

Really cannot get my head around the difference in price and why people pay it, i know its better for environment but they can cost $6.00 a pop!

I think the use of tungsten weights contributes more toward having that weight in a small, dense package that can punch through matted vegetation, as well as having a harder weight that makes more noise when it contacts rocks or glass beads. The visual thing is also a factor, but to a lesser degree than the other two benefits, at least in my opinion.

It is really too bad that the costs are so high for the weights. When we started Density Tackle, that was our first product (tungsten weights, hence the name Density). But, the shipping for the weights is so expensive, that it was truely cost prohibitive. I still have contacts to get the product, but do not think the weights are that much better. In the Canadian Provincial Parks, it is illegal to use ANY lead for fishing. I have heard that they check your tackle box forr lead before they ask you for your fishing license......(not sure if there is any truth to that though).

I realize the benefits of W, but I cannot justify the cost for my economic situation. When I fish Lake Union, I can lost as many as 10 sinkers in an hour's time. If I were using W, I'd go broke too fast.

I use tungsten. It is more expensive, but it is also more accurate in measurement. For example, a 1/8 oz lead weight from three different manufacturers is probably going to be different for each. Not so much with the more expensive metal.

Also, and don't be surprised that lead will probably be outlawed here in this state. It has already been done in many others because it really is a nasty thing to put into a lake.

Also...it fishes better, it is heavier per volume (so smaller size lure).

If you are losing 10 weights a day maybe you should switch how you are fishing or use a different presentation...although I have to admit, I have had days like that out on Banks lake for Smallies, where my texas rig doesn't last too long, and the big ones will break off.

After fishing alot in areas where it's crucial to have the ability to tell the difference in bottom composition, i would say 100% tungsten is needed, but for the weekend warrior, or if your losing alot of gear, go cheap. Just my two cents.

Don't think the fish care. I would look at the baits over the weights. I use both and cant tell much difference at all between the two other than price:money: . Now what bait to use should be more of a factor to think about:-k .
