I heard this story on the radio and it made me cringe!

I have always thought about something like this happening but OMG. I flinch anytime someone get snagged up or hung in trees around me anyways. I have been slapped in the face with worms before(plastic and real). Haven't been able to find out exact situation but a 3oz weight coming back at you is scary. It makes it worse that he has a wife and baby. Just thought I would post this here, be careful when hung up in the future.

That is definitely tragic. However, I have come up with a solution to prevent this. When you are snagged, and wish to tug on the line to free it, always make sure that you are doing it to either side of you and NOT directly in front of you. That way, if it gets freed and starts coming back, you will not be in its path as long as you stay still. It will whiz past you but don't move yet because the recoil can also hit you.

The only way this won't work is if you freak out and move into the lure coming back.

I have pictures that were sent to me of a horror story similar to this one only this one had pics.Some guy was out fishing got snagged and the treble hook caught his eyeball and eye lid.Pretty gross stuff.This guy did not die as far as I know.The pics are hella gross and I wont put them in an open chat area.But this stuff happens.
Ive had gaf hooks caught in my hand as well as big hali hooks like 8/0 or bigger.Once I had to go to the Allentown FD to have a barbed hook removed from my thumb.Sheot happens while fishing and hunting.

Got a treble barb stuck in my right thumb at Sammamish last week,..had to cut the skin around it and finally rip it out with my pliers,.I was more scared than anything,..the pain wasn't too bad even after it came out,..but man I gotta admit I was in fear,..I'm a big baby anyways,..LOL,..men weren't designed for pain,..all that RAMBO junk isn't real,..that "Bite-The-Bullet" stuff is for the birds,..GOD really knew the deal when it came to creating MAN,..cause I know me and PAIN dont get along at all,..LOL.

Here is my plug for barbless......(although i don't always use barbless, just sometimes)


I have had many hooks in me. i'm just clumsy that way . i even have down the proper technique to remove barbed hooks from flesh (yes, there is a proper tech., i learned it from the doctors!!)

BUT....i was on the salt one time and got a huge halibut hook in my hand....deep....very bad. the one saving grace i had was that the barb was pinched. i was able to pull that sucker right out with nothing more than a puncture wound, instead of a gash caused by barbed hooks. man i was lucky....

my point; here is what i do. if i am in a secluded area (or far away from the launch and hospital) and fish with larger hooks, i will pinch the barbs. ya, i know, you loose a couple more fish, but it could save a LONG trip to the hospital. Also, just a tip (which i have done), if the hook is embedded not to deep, push it the rest of the way OUT OF THE SKIN and pinch or clip the barb, then pull it back through. Hopefully all my mis-fortunes can help someone!!

Holy smokes I never thought of pulling on a snag could kill you. I've taken a couple to the family jewels, but nothing too serious. I sure will be careful every time I snag.

I think its sad but not a likely thing to happen. Who uses a 3 oz weight??? Thats like getting shot with a black powder gun.

How do you like that story though? Its a fishing story and then at the end of the story, he was here illegally looking for work.

That's pretty wild, and sad...one in a billion, that's for sure.

I got snagged with a treble hook in the lower lip early this season...I was about 4 miles back into a backcountry lake, and I didn't pinch the barbs. It took a lot of fumbling, watering eyes, and even a little wooziness...but I got it out. The tissue in the lips is pretty tough, and it hurt like heck removing it. You could have dragged me all around by the hook--it wasn't coming out easily.

Even since then, I don't pull straight back when trying to get free from a snag.
Now, I hold the rod to my side and put a slight bend in the rod (away from me) when pulling. When the hook comes free and goes airborne, the rod is already at your side...the extra tension to the side flings the hook a foot or two to your side.
