Does anybody else make their own little setups for bass? I use the typical crank bait types, but when it comes to jigs I always catch myself buying a jig, then taking it apart only to put it back together with my own trailer or some type of soft bait. It has helped me in the past, granted I havent landed the big one but caught a number of 4lbers off them before. Anyways, just wondering if anyone else does this.

I have made a lot of my own bass tackle over the years. It is fun, and sometimes better, but it can be frustrating also.

Pouring your own worms and grubs is a cheaper way to get them, if you use enough to pay for the molds, the extra colors, scents, etc., etc. If you plan on doing this for years, and you find a mold you like, than go for it. I have found that I cannot get the texture or the colors that I like, so I am back to spending the bucks for something I will actually use.

I have several Jig Molds, and still pour my own. I also tie flys, so this was just a natural extension of what I do. Generally speaking, you can buy pre-poured jigs from Cabalas or Bass Pro, or even Stamina Tackle, and add your own dressings, and I doubt that I will ever buy complete Bass Jibs again. Still, when I get in a pinch for time, I might.

I have made crank baits from scratch before, but I find that trying to get the balance just right is pretty tough. I would have to say that maybe one in 7 or 8 actually dive and swim the way I want. You can buy Crank Bait Blanks at Stamina Tackle and paint your own. This can save a little, and sure gives you the colors you want. I just find that what I want they don't have, so I'm back to spending the bucks.
I have made a few top water baits as well. These can be easy, and they work well. If you use top water baits, this might be worth the time.

I always tie my own Bass Flies. I just don't like fishing flies that I don't tie myself.

I agree with you. I like using my own molds. Its fun and I get to use my own ideas and when I have that good day off my own stuff, my buddies get jealous and want to buy them off me....I love it!
