Tournament questions?
I will pose this question later in the season also, but I am sure that those of you who are here for the winter can answer the question very well. I have aspirations to try my hand in a few club tournaments this season, although I have no affiliation with onyone yet. I am wondering what gear you all bring along. How many rods/reels are in your compliment? How much gear do you bring compared to what you actually use? I'm sure that one can get by on just a few combo's and a tackle box of the right gear, but what's the norm for the average club guy?
Thanks,
Chris
Thanks,
Chris
RE:Tournament questions?
If you are talking about backseating then it depends on who's boat you are going to be in. If its a person you get to know and fish a lot with out side of tournaments then talk with them about it before the tourny. If you are going to fish with a person that is for the most part a complete stranger bring as little as possible.
THIS is what I use when I backseat. You can fit plenty in 7 plano 3600s. I also bring a weigh in bag that I just fold up and lay under the boxes. You can fit a small amount of stuff along the side or even get creating and sew a pocket on.
4 or 5 combos is about all the room you are going to get. Id take 3 baitcasters and 2 spinning. Bring a life vest and a small towel.
You should only plan on having the amount of room that you would under your legs if your sitting on a short chair. If you are fishing a two day tournament away from home you could always bring more stuff in your owe car and decided if you need to change any thing.
Basically just bring as little as possible and dont plan on being any where but the back. Every one is different but until you find out be as considerate as possible. After you get out on the water you'll probably only use 1 or 2 rods and a hand full of tackle.
Whats more important is always offer half the gas for the day so bring lots of cash because it could run you $50 or more per day. If you take a lunch bring it in a big zip lock and keep your garbage inside and clean. Don't bash the the cowling (cover on the motor) with crankbaits and if you see the boats about to hit a dock push it away and treat the boat as if it was yours and you just spent $50,000 on it.

RE:Tournament questions?
I am a happy Skeeter owner and I can not imagine that there is too much difference in the equipment you might take as the boater. You could probably take the garage if you like. 7 3600's sounds about right. How do you split your stuff up? Any techniques you suggest? If the tourney is a bag-a-boat tourney do you suggest working together or just fish and cull?

RE:Tournament questions?
well if you are a boater then take whatever you want. In that case Ill be dragging around two rod lockers full of rods and basically everything else I own.
What do you mean by bag-a-boat?

I think he means one bag per boat. 5 fish limit. Both anglers best 5 between the two.

then fish and cull together.
RE:Tournament questions?
i usually bring 3 or 4 double decker boxes full of my favorite plastics. one for yamamoto, one for local companies, and a couple for everything else. i also have a couple boxes with crankbaits (one just for high end baits), a spinnerbait box, a box full of jigs & trailors, and a all purpose tackle box with other misc. tackle. i usually bring about 4 rods with me, a couple spinning and a couple baitcasting like daniel. basically bring what you would normaly bring with you, whatever you have confidence in. to be honest at most tournaments you could probably bring one box full of stuff and do fine, it's all confidence. oh, and most club tournaments aren't team things, at least not in the club i'm in...
RE:Tournament questions?
Yup most club tournaments are every man for himself.

RE:Tournament questions?
Thanks for starting this thread Chris, you beat me to it.
From the sound of it I need to buy a LOT more gear before I consider doing any tourneys. I've only got two spinning setups and only enough tackle to fill one triple decker box.
Is club affiliation necessary to enter tournaments?

RE:Tournament questions?
There are some "Opens" such as the Sammamish Open the Hawhunters are sponsoring. http://www.washingtonlakes.com/Forum/vi ... php?t=2264 I am not of great financial means or great fishing skills so the club tourmanents, I think, are going to be the way for me to learn about some lakes and get some skills and finally catch some a fish on something other than a drop shot rig. $20 for a tourney is a lot easier for a novice like myself to justify as compared to $100, which by no means is expensive when you think about it. I am just giving everyone advance notice for next year though...watch out for the Skeeter, It will be hauling in big bags!!! This should be a great year for some of my fishing firsts for me.

RE:Tournament questions?
You do not need a lot more gear. Like I said earlier, whatever you do bring you will probably end up using a quarter of it and there's nothing wrong with that. The Western Bass club that Skeeter pointed out to you is a big club and does more than just tournament fishing. I could be wrong but I think they still do fish-ins and other get together where you can get time on the water and learn with out a tournament setting.EastsideRedneck wrote:Thanks for starting this thread Chris, you beat me to it.

There are guys on this site that represent clubs from Olympia to Everett and even east of the mountains. If you join any club you will see the same guys all over the state traveling from tournament to tournament. No one club is going to make you the best angler ever. Its up to you to get on the water and earn some respect.
To enter open tournament (open to the public) no you do not need to be in a club. There a lot of tournament state wide that you could keep you busy for a year with out ever joining a club. But all of the opens are team tournaments so you need or should have a partner. And they run from $100 and up. It would be wise to join a club first and fish members only tournaments. You've probably never been on 99% of the bodies of water where tournaments are hosted so time on the water is huge.

RE:Tournament questions?
It probably closer to 99.9% of the water Dan... at least on this side of the country. We'll see how the season unfolds, I may stay unaffiliated again this summer and work on some more bad habits on local waters.:thumright Since I don't have a whole lot of gear, I had better be good with what little I've got.
