Santa came early....

Post by dilbert » Mon Dec 10, 2007 3:06 pm

Santa came early bringing me a Football Jig mold (FBB-4H-AFM) that makes 1/8oz, 1/4oz, 3/8oz, and 1/2oz football jigs with or without a weedguard using 60-degree regular or flateye hooks and a finesse dropshot mold (FDS-8-A) that makes 1/32oz, 1/16oz, 1/8oz, 3/16oz, 1/4oz, 3/8oz, 1/2oz, and 5/8oz dropshot weights. Here are some photos from my first attempt using the molds.

Those look Sweet. Are you going to sell them?? When the flw tour hit richland, this summer, my buddy works in sporting goods at Walmart there, said all the pros were looking for them. Ive seen some of your pics, how do you use them, for some of those lunkers you have caught this year??

No plans to sell them... just for personal use (and a neighbor with a bass boat... and a coworker with an ample lead supply). It's pretty hard to find them locally and I was tired of the mail order places being sold out of the ones I liked. I usually add a craw or twin tail grub to them and fish them slowly hopping along the bottom.

They all have a hole molded in them where a weedguard can be glued in place. I do it this way rather than molding the guard in place because it is easier to do the powder paint without a weedguard and add it later if I want. I don't usually use a weedguard since I feel that it takes away from the finesse aspect of the way I fish these.

Dilbert-

Nice jigs. What did you end up using for paint? I have seen the type you heat up the jig head and dip in the paint, but I didn't like the rough texture it seemed to produce. I have also dipped them, but due to ignorance, I used the wrong type of paint. Once I put on any plastic, whether it was a skirt or grub...the paint would essentially melt and become sticky. Whatever you used looks to have produced a nice smooth finish... Thanks!

I used Pro-Tec powder paint. There is a little trial and error until you find the right amount to heat the jig head before dipping it in the powder. Then, even if it is dull or lumpy, it smooths right out when you cure it in the oven. Once cured it's chip resistant and wormproof.

i only use jigs with weedguards when im flipping into heavy cover. if you dont have to use a weed guard it just makes your jigs look that much better.

Yeah, but it takes away from my other winter hobby, brewing beer. I can't remember the last time I fired up the mash tun.

It's legal for me to brew 200 gallons of beer a year before I have to worry about that. I think the most I've made in one year was 50 gallons.

After 200 gallons its time to use the old General Lee.

Nice looking jigs dilbert. You should start up a guide service on Tapps. "Home Brew and Baits" your Lake Tapps Guide Service. You could give free pints with the puchase of a guided trip and 5 jigs. :thumright
No really though, nice work on the jigs. Let us know how they do. There's nothing like catching a bass on a bait that you've made yourself.
