New Lures

Post by cavdad45 » Wed Sep 26, 2007 8:47 am

I have never tried a Lucky Craft lure because the thought of losing a $15 or $20 lure is depressing. However I hear alot of you recommending the Sammy. I looked at them, but before I slap down money for a few, I need input on which size and color has been successful for you.

Also has anyone tried the Swayback Spook? Is it any good? I sometimes use a Super Spook Jr and found it to work well in the right circumstances, but does the swayback walk-the-dog better?

Any other lures that you would recommend?

well the sammy walks way easier than the spook if thats anything to take into consideraton. When it sits on the pause, it sits a lot more vertical than horizontal however.

Cavdad !!WHATS UP DUDE ?...hey man i love those luckycrafts , i hate the prices ..lol .. over the years , and i mean one at a time, i have manage to collect about 15 different lures , mostly jerkbait a few cranks and that SAMMY .. I use the american shad color and it has it's time and place on the water .. dont fall for dream that spending 15 bucks will get you a bass all day (NOT TRUE) .. it's a matter of proper presentation , proper size , color , and timing that make these lure a slight different than your $5 plugs ... first Understand why they cost $15. , They are all handmade one at a time , they have about 15-20 coats of paint and all lure are tested to ensure they run true right out of the package .. because of the fine detail that goes into them they look more realistic in the water ... FYI if the fish are in the jumps , alot of different top water baits will work , i would only tie up my sammy if im fishing in lake that have bait fish that are somewhat close in color and size of Sammy , outside of that your just fishing for a top water bite (GET IT)... i would say buy it to add to the tackle box , but dont expect it to out produce what your already using for a top water bite .. Never bought into the Magic Lure theory, atleast I don't anymore. I've been real curious about those high end lures and wondered if they justify the price. Since being on this site, I've heard alot of guys talking about them and recommending them... and even praising them. I've decided that I will invest in a couple Sammys, but was not sure as to size. I totally agree with you about them being another part of the arsenal for specific set of circumstances like most any other lure.

By the way, the have a LuckyCraft rattling bait similar to a Trap. Does it have a better sound or what. Are there advantages to the LuckyCraft over the ol' Bill Lewis.

I have used a Sammy, and i don't think it outproduces a spook at all, actually i prefer a spook. Just my 2 cents.

about japanese vs domestic lure prices and whatnot - I think usually you get what you pay for. The construction on the jdm baits are usually top notch compared to your $3~5 cranks over here. Plus if you are into that sorta thing they are a lot more detailed in the color and finish as well. There are instances where I don't really feel the need for this sort of realism such as lipless cranks but in certain baits I just like the jdm baits more. (like the jerkbaits for instance - pointers and so much better than, say, a huksy jerk).

i have one of the LV100's (the rattle style bait) and i love it! it seems to have more of a wobble.

i'm not super impressed with the sammy. i mean they're good, but not amazing IMO (which they should be for $15!!!). i think i'm gonna get one of the moonsault cranks in craw pattern next.

It all just goes back to confidence. $15 really isn't that much money but $3 is much less. LC aren't going to make bass appear in place they never where before. They are nice and might "work" physically better then lower end baits but are not magic. The BPS slim dog is a good one for a lot less. It sits up right and walks fairly good. Basically if you can afford it and dont care then get the LC. If its really not in your budget then get something else.

i 2nd that

:)

with lcs, they run true right out of the box. no need to test or tune, you dont even need to swap out the hooks. most manufacturers skimp on hooks.

ive been through my share of lures, and have actually started from the bottom up. as the price went higher, i noticed the quality and durability improved. fishing is a hobby or a job, where you have to pay to play. well, i choose to pay.

if you are hesitant on throwing these lures because of price, there are alternatives. i suggest you pick up a lure retriever, as they work wonders.

my cousin swears by them, and many others do too. there are others who hate them, and rather throw a rapala. seeing is believing. the only way you will really find out, is for you to buy one and see for yourself... let me also add, seeing could also be not believing

I am with Nik on the sammy's. I throw spooks over them anytime. As far as lipless cranks go, from my experience LC's are the way to go, I have fished out of the back seat with guys for several hours with the guy in the front throwing an LC while I was throwing a Rat-L-Trap. He had 3 fish in the well and I hadn't had a single bite yet. That made me a believer. The LC lipless baits have a much tighter wiggle and run much truer, both of these I think help with the reaction strike. I will also throw Yozuri, they are comparible to the LC's in my opinion.
When you think you know it all, its time to quit. Knowledge should be gained on every trip.

I like alot of the Yozuri lures, especially their suspending jerkbait. Sweet action and easy to manipulate.

Has anyone tried the Swayback Spooks?

It is all about what you have confidence in and using it in the right situation. I happen to have alot of confidence in the LC Sammy 85 (American Shad and Ghost Minnow) for a topwater bite when the situation is right.

When comparing lipless rattling crankbaits I have not found a big difference other than out of the box hook quality.

Cost is most definitely a factor (there is a huge difference in getting them from a sponsor vice paying for them out of your monthly budget) and that has put me in some pretty comical situations (when viewed after the fact) on what I have done to recover a snagged LC lure.

No such thing as the sliver bullet - use what you have confidence in; keep experimenting with other lures and you may develop additional confidence baits.

I dont think that this is a new lure but I have seen lures in the store that look like a duck and its feet swims like a duck. I have heard stories about bass eating baby ducks before but I have never seen it before. Does anyone actually think the lure would work? because I dont.

I know what your talking about. I have seen them in the store and online.
I wouldn't even consider wasting my time on a lure like that. To me they seem like a gimmick. I know bass can and have eaten ducks before but you know there main forage is other fish. Spend your time matching the hatch and you'll be more successful on the water than spending time and money throwing something like that.

There's also a Budweizer can with hooks and a diving lip out there, too. It's more of a novelty than a serious fishing lure. Oh yeah, it may catch a fish or two, but a person can catch a fish or two on just about anything. It's made to catch a wallet more than a fish.

I've also bought a new lure the other day at Joes. Its a Jig that has a deep diver head on the body. I havent got to use it more than once. But from my experience from the first time... I dont see how its any different from an ordinary jig. I cant even get it to dive like a crank. It just sinks and reels in straight. Maybe with more practice. I can figure out how this lure works.
If in doubt set the hook!

I need to dredge up this old thread again, but post a new question with it.

Which LC lures are your favorites? Model, size, and color; please. Particularly in Sammy's and Pointers, but may grab a few others also. Looking to get my stocking stuffed this Christmas.:santa:

The Staysee (LC Jerkbait) is the only one that I'm into or would recommend because you dont have to tune the bait and it runs up to 9ft deep.

Half the reason why I dont fish jerkbaits to much is because they dont run/suspend/dive to a good depth.. But these ones always do.
