[quote="ChrisB"]OH YA, Gisteppo !! Since you live on a lake, spread the word for me will ya. Casting out a line, setting the rod in a rod holder, then going inside your house to do other things for the rest of the day is ILLEGAL ]
I've seen that way too many times. Being the social deviant I am, I've been known to pull their line up, write a note that says "Power eggs? How 'bout some worms next time, tightwad!" and attach it to their hook securely. Sadly, I've never been around to see their reaction to getting a message from a trout.

I think I laughed so hard I may have thrown up a little in my mouth at the thought of a note on a hook.=d>

Illegal, immoral, and ridiculous. I can't believe people would do that, but we see it all the time fishing down the lake.
I love the note idea, Im gonna use that one on The Thumb next time he leaves a line out while he is playing with the babies in the yard....

I will get right next too docks even let the boat rest up to it. Just try to fish with the sun in your favor and you will catch fish up close. I do it almost every time I go out. If there is a prob? I can get on the dock fast and easy if you know what I mean!

RE:Fishing the docks
Be VERY careful with this one. Once you are touching the dock with your boat, you are actually trespassing on the property of the homeowner. Afloat you are good to go, but making contact with the structure is the same as putting your foot inside the property.I will get right next too docks even let the boat rest up to it. Once you violate the border of the property, think of what would happen if you had someone trespassing. If you don't like them, you as the landowner then have all of the rights in a bad situation. If you have a belligerent, angry, armed homeowner that doesn't want you there, and you snuggle up to the dock, he holds the cards. If you come blowing out of your boat onto his dock in an aggressive fashion, and he pulls out a weapon and lays you down, that isn't illegal, its self defense. Ask around the site, you will find that self defense is a popular topic.
If someone is actually resting their boat on my dock, I will very politely ask them not to, because it actually is too close to fish (smallies especially are sensitive to boats, and will scatter to deeper water if a boat is within 15ft of them). If said boat owner is against my dock and makes an aggressive gesture and climbs out of his boat onto my dock like I am in the wrong, he is going to have a very bad, very painful, very wet day that will end in a fashion he didn't intend.

RE:Fishing the docks
Good reply E,..one thing though,..if I'm not mistaken there Is not a Sef-Defense Law in the RCW'S,..lol,..I could be wrong though so feel free 2 correct me,..I do agree with the Self-Defense Idea though,..if I was a property owner on a lake front and someone was to ruffle my feathers I'd sure let them know,..wouldn't brannish a weapon but they'd know quick and in a hurry that they were in VIOLATION-OF-MY-PROPERTY,..of course I'd be willing and able 2 pay for their medical exspenses! You will find a ton of info on this site about self defense.

RE:Fishing the docks
You understand this is trespassing? You are the reason some dock owners can be aggressive towards fisherman. Show some respect and not give a bad name for the rest of us! I will never step foot on a dock. Put my hand against it to keep boat off of it to get unsnagged, yes. I have asked before to come onto a dock and all have let me to retrieve my lure. If I cannot reach it I will just break it off and move on.Trent Hale wrote:I will get right next too docks even let the boat rest up to it. RE:Fishing the docks
Isn't it sad how some bad apples, both fishermen and owners, have spoiled it so much for so many. Dock fishing use to be fun, but now it is almost close quarters combat.
You could eliminate a lot of the bad fishermen if you stopped the beer. Ya, you read it right. I know that everyone wants a cold one when it is hot, but one so often leads some of our fellow fishermen to two, then four, then a 12 pack, and then the don't think straight, let alone cast straight. When sober, I doubt that very many fishermen would ever consider confronting a dock owner, and fewer would even consider coming in contact with a dock, but after a few cold ones, well, ..............
You also have combative owners. Some are combative because of the bad fishermen. Some are combative because the either don't understand the law or they are overly possessive. It is not limited to docks. I know of a few areas where a land owner buys an acre of forest land and post a 1000 acres of public land as if it were his own. There is no explanation for this, except they are overly possessive.
Personally, if an owner, or any person for that matter, is on the dock, I leave it alone. If the owner is close by the dock, I have been known to ask the owner if he minds if I make a couple of close cast - usually after commenting on how well he takes care of his property on the water. If no one is around, the dock is open game, but I treat it with the same respect I would if it were my own. But when all is said or done, is a fish or two worth getting into a fight over?

RE:Fishing the docks
As other waterfront property owners have mentioned, have the same respect for our docks and beachfront that you would like in your house. Utilize my dock as much as you can, catch all the bass under my dock for all I care, it's not my lake, but just have common sense. Stay off the dock, don't litter, don't cause a ruckus, etc.fish4brains wrote:You understand this is trespassing? You are the reason some dock owners can be aggressive towards fisherman. Fully agree with the last few posts, and think that TH's post is ridiculous. You'll never see me using the dock as an anchor.

Today fishing Pine Lake I ended up with a dead battery and duh no oars so I was pretty much screwed. Wind blew me into the back of a cove when I had no choice but to drift directly into a ladies dock, while she was outside on the phone. I apologized profusely, felt like an idiot and was extremely humble. I talked to her for a minute or two and then she actually gave up one of her trolling motor batteries to me off of her motorized dock to allow me to get back across the lake. I took her address down and promised to return it as quickly as possible. When I took it back to her she was frustrated because she has trouble keeping all those batteries charged. Well I just happen to own a spare 3 battery onboard charger from my last boat, which I am just getting ready to go hook up for her. You better believe what goes around comes around! do unto others baby! -Dave

RE:Fishing the docks
Had a boat with 3 guys out off the dock this evening whack a 5lb 6oz bucketmouth. They were very respectful, and once I saw them put the fish back in the water and respect the dock space, I let them know about two other well hidden stumps to go fish that should be holding some bass as well.
