Just moved to King County from Idaho...need help with color selection..

Post by Gantley82 » Fri Jun 12, 2009 7:29 am

I just moved to Renton from Coeur d'Alene, ID, where I have done a lot of bass fishing in the past. Typically this time of year over there I would be doing pretty good throwing a jig and pig typically black 3/8oz, thats my favorite bait that I have the most confidence in. Then of course the Senko wacky rigged was pretty solid there too and it seems to be a pretty good producer here...and everywhere I guess. The question I have is about colors...typically green pumpkin is a solid producer there as far as plastics...I have noticed some people saying they have been catching the LMBs using the pumpkinseed color...what do you guys think? I have my girlfriends dad coming into town from Idaho for the weekend today, I have pretty much selected Lake Sawyer as my first choice of where I wanna drag the old boat down to...what colors do you guys typically use for baits like plastics/jigs/spinnerbaits etc?? Any info would be much appreciated!

Cheers

Nick

Sounds like the colors will be pretty much the same as you've been using.

Typically for senkos I have better luck with the watermelon/red flake Zeros (caught 9 last night using that setup, biggest was 3#14). I've also had good results with the baby bass pattern (green/white laminate). Swim senkos in baby bass also have landed fish for me (which reminds me, I need to go buy some more of those).
Kreatures in watermelon/red flake and pumpkin/black and gold flake have worked well for me, and Jay has great success with the black/blue Kreature, all fished weightless around weedlines and tight to structure. I mostly fish stained water but still have better success with natural colors than a black combo.

For weighted plastics you're going to get a mixed bag of answers. I prefer black with a red curly tail or the black/red Manns augertail worms which are getting impossible to find up here (they're definitely a Southern thing as Trent and I have discussed). Some guys swear by black/blue, some prefer red shad. You'll get lots of answers on this one.

For spinnerbaits, I like the standards - white, black, chartreuse. I've always been particular to a single silver blade, no preference on type since they all seem to work. I never have luck on gold blades but I think Jerry throws those a lot and catches on them. Maybe I'm just not holding my mouth right.

Welcome to Washington! I live right down the road from you in Federal Way, so if you ever wanna hit some water together I can show you a few places within a 30 minute drive that will put you on some nice fish.

Black is a good dark water or dark cloud color. My go to colors are the watermelon and pumpkin seed with red flake. Smoke with red or blue flake also:-$

Aaron - thanks for the detailed response, I would definitely be interested in heading out and gettin on the fish for sure, my boat is just a little 14.5' aluminum with a 15 horse outboard and a little minnkota so its not the best for big water but lets keep in touch and try to get a trip locked down maybe in the next week, I would say this weekend but im gonna be pretty tied up fishing with the girlfriends dad..let me know and again thanks for the help guys
