Golden Shiners?

Post by RB » Fri Jun 27, 2008 11:12 am

I was just wondering if anyone has had success with lures that are colored after golden shiners. I have stumbled onto a good deal, but have not yet fished with this color scheme in this state.

If you don't get any thing with it don't use it! HAHA I've not had any luck with it. Not saying it wont work? The perch color will be better.

One thing i can suggest when it comes to selecting colors for baits , whether it's hard baits or plastics .. Keep it simple , period .. Nature colors and craw pattern colors will give you the most success by far ..Think about what your attempting to imitate in nature with the color that your using , if nothing naturally looks like your bait , your not gone to get many bites ..If you do find that your catching fish on a off color bait , it's not the color thats appealing to the fish it's the action that the bait is giving off..i.e tight wiggle, wide wiggle, slashing, walking the dog etc .. Hope this helps BBD :batman:

I agree that it's movement more than color. For example, occasionally I'll treat my bass in my pond to some feeder goldfish, a color that bass generally don't see around here. The very first time I tried it, the bass was hitting the plastic bag in my hands before I could release them into the water! It's definitely the movement. As far a baby bluegill are concerned, the babies in my pond are very bland in color, in fact, the only way to tell what they are is by shape. So if you find a lure thats shaped like a baby bluegill and has the same movement, you're probably on the right track as far as clear water is concerned. Now, if you were fishing dark or murky water, than color would have more of an influence.

These baits I am looking at are swim baits that have good wiggle, its a ABT Rip Shad , River 2 Sea Kong , Califronia Swimbabe Baby E in baby bass blue gill and osprey. I think I'll end up getting them so I can have some good stuff when I go back east where there isn't an abundance of trout.

just as trout baits work fine in areas that dont get stocked, shiner/shad colors work fine here.

I've had good luck with all brass colored spinners from blue fox... But never tried gold shiners before. Time to do some experimenting!

let me pose this question

instead of matching the hatch or using what is norm, what makes you hesitant of using a color that is different? what do you have to lose? you will never know until you try...

i have no doubt that bait will work with that color, or any other color period. use the internet machine and google pink bass lures. see for yourself how many people catch bass with colors that are considered silly.

historically most of the information regarding bass and their habits has been forwarded by anglers who fished under specific conditions and has paid off. their theories on bass have since been exploited in all waters. what we sometimes hold up as the truth, is more than frequently repeated opinion.

as they say with opinions, everyone has one, but who is to say which one is right.

as time comes, the kong may look smaller and smaller to you. hopefully you have a rod and reel to match it up with.

john is a hell of a painter, make use of his skills.

I have an okuma xh on its way. hopefully will be here tomorrow or monday at the latest. I also have a daiwa heartland which I will use for the lighter ones. The okuma will be matched with a cardiff 400 and the heartland with a citica 300. Might upgrade that one down the road but I assume it'll be ok with the smaller swimiies. BTW I'm eliseguy on nwbasser. The custom perch and trout from john should be ready in 2 weeks hopefully.

Right now I have a mattlure baby bass on my 7ft quantum rod. Its pushing it a little but I will give that a shot tomorrow, if I can sneak out when the girlfriend is at work.

Hopefully you come out to long lake with daniel. we are trying to set something up and will bring my buddy Trent who pulls out some nice Bass out of Long Lake, except for when I'm with him. I'm apparently bad luck.

yea i sorta put 2 and 2 together already, i figured you were the same person.

next time you go out there with him, give him a nudge really early in the game, and ask him what his excuse will be this time. ha - put a fire under him.

I was reading through here so I thought I would throw in my 2 cents. There are differant reasons a fish will hit a bait but the one we get most often with hard plastics is a reaction bite the fish just hits it because its instincts tell it to the fish doesn't think oh that isn't a so and so minow so I won't eat it it sees a wounded looking flashy thing and like a cat with a laser pointer it just can't help its self!
