Paddle Tail Swimbaits

Post by trucknmusic » Sat Feb 09, 2008 2:35 pm

Has anyone tried any of the basstrix hollow body paddle tail swimbait knock-offs . I was looking into getting some of these but the Basstrix ones are still hard to come by. Are any of the others as good - like the power bait hollow body for instance. Thanks.

trucknmusic, sorry no one has replied to your post. I think if you posted this up in the bass forum you might have more luck. Maybe one of the Mods will move it for ya. I'll send Ipod a PM.

As far as Basstrix goes they are second to none. I actually got to see them at a Fred Hall Show years ago when they first came out and met the man who invented them. Amazing idea. And a real good guy. His supply has been decimated due to such a high demand so they are near imposibble to come by these days. I would go for the Reaction Strike Fathead Jr. as a second choice. There are plenty of paddle tail knock-offs and most will do you just fine. The biggest problem you will find with cheaper versions is their ability to tear after a few fish. I have not pesonally had the chance to try the Reaction Strike but I hear and read nothing but great things about the bait.

Here is a cool VLOG from TackleWarehouse.com on Paddletail Swimbaits that they offer. Good way to check them out.

I've seen the Basstrix plastics at Outdoor Emporium but was weary of buying them since I knew little about 'em. Looks like I may need to make a trip down there during lunch sometime in the next few weeks.

Basstrix are fragile - so if you are gonna spend the $$ make sure to get some mend-it or something to make it last longer. I wont buy any more basstrix when there are decent alternatives available.

I have been fortunate to find a continuing supply of Basstrix lures that I pay $10/pack and resell on Ebay for $20-27 per pack. I haven't tried them yet and probably won't because I heard they are very soft and prone to tearing. I am looking forward to some of the clones and copies that are sure to hit the market in the next couple years. Really looking for one by YUM.

BTW, the Sassy Shad is not the same as the new Basstrix type lures are more slender and are hollow.

I suppose I should actually answer the question:

Basstrix are the "standard" of course - good movement but get weighted hooks with sufficient weight or they will roll.

The only alternatives I have are

Luck-E-Strike 6" paddletail, which is a bit tougher than the basstrix. Their tail section isn't as thin which is a bit less action but its a great alternative.

Reaction Innovations skinny dipper. Not hollow, not as detailed. Swims with decent motion and has all the reaction innovations color range which is nice. Cheaper too. I like this bait although its not a direct alternative to the basstrix. Smaller presentation for sure.

Others to think about:
Reaction strike fathead jr
berkley hollow paddletail
money minnow from money lures
poor boys silly rabbit

You are going to want to fish any of these baits on weighted hooks, but I think sometimes the "roll" being bad is overrated.

The Berkley Hollow Paddletails were designed with heavy input from Jay Yelas because he was a Berkley sponsored pro winning FLW tourneys with another company's plastics (Basstrix). Yelas won FLW angler of the year last year and he'll be the first to tell you one of the main reasons was the Basstrix swimbaits. He used them in instances where he would normally throw a spinnerbait, and also he could skip them under docks unlike a spinnerbait. He now believes the Berkley baits are superior to the Basstrix, and will be mass produced unlike the Basstrix which are impossible to find. You can find them online now and they should be in most chain retailers by the end of the month. They come with 3 swimbaits, a #2 treble and swivel, and a 6/0 weighted (3/32) hook so you have the option of rigging for open water or weedless for $9.99. I'm not usually a huge fan of Berkley's expensive little bait kits, but these seem fairly reasonable considering you get 3 baits and everything you need to rig them.
