Depends on what type of lures you want to make. That kit is for making walleye troll lures, which are more like a wedding ring style lure (they spin on the line rather than on a wire).

This kit makes spinners more like the ones in the photos that IB posted.

The wire twisting is easier the thinner the diameter is. Common wire diameters you will see available at local areas are 0.024", 0.031", 0.035", 0.041". I will tell you that you should not have any problems twisting the wire. I have learned to "give yourself" more wire to work with the thicker you go. It is harder to twist a shorter piece of wire than a longer one. This is my only rule of thumb.

Musky wires start at about 0.051". These puppies are harder to twist but it can be done. Just remember that it doesn't have to look pretty to catch fish and that the fish won't know how ugly the wire wraps are. :bball:

I am stoked that you're getting into this. Hope the Davis book gets to you sooner than later.
Got the book today to read. My concern with the wires (I will give it a try when I get the supplies) is that if they are ugly they will not track right in the water. A bad spin may chase the fish away.

He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

Just to warn you, this will become very addicting! I started out just pouring some lead for small jig heads for my grubs. It then went to flippin jigs and spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. Next was soft plastics and rods! It never ends](*,) It is a fantastic hobby that gives you a chance to meet a lot of great people through various tackle making sites. Enjoy!

You're right!! That's what makes the winter bearable. Working on projects, making lures, making rods, experimenting on the next super lure. All the while daydreaming of the trophy fish that will nail your creation.

I think I'll probably end up getting this kit sometime after Christmas.

I just went to Sportsman's Warehouse today and couldn't find any spinner building kits. They had a lot of fly tying kits and one jig making kit though.

There are no spinner kits. They sell components: wire shaft, blades, bodies, beads, etc. You will need to buy these parts to make the inline spinners.

Toni,

You don't need to be concerned about wire twists affecting the lure. What is more important is that the section of wire that holds the body and blade is straight. If the lure body weight is in proportion to the blade and you have the right sized clevis, your spinners will spin.
