Fishing jigs

This is an interesting thread. So here are a couple comments:

Yes, I have caught bass on a jig-n-pig at Lacamas. It's my early season go to bait pretty much everywhere I go. When the water temps hit 47, it will outfish most other techniques. When the temps hit 51, it is the best lure around. Usually by the time the water reaches the high 50's or low 60's, I switch to faster lures or ones that I feel are easier for me to fish (spinnerbaits, plastic worms, crankbaits,etc). I usually don't use them again until late fall as the water temps fall, except for occassional flipping situations when a Texas-rigged worm or creature fails to illicit many strikes.

I am very interested in using one as a dropshot weight, as I have heard of this before, but I am still working on the dropshot technique in general.

And, islandbass! Hurry up and get it down so you can write another amazing post like the one you did on dropshotting!!!

Man, is this a great thread!!!! I have not dabbled much with jigs because I realized as BBDez said, it will take a serious commitment. This season I had planned to get to know the drop shot and jigs. I fell in love with the former that I put jigs on the backburner because DSing was so effective.

That's it. I'm going to attack this jig thing and put away the drop shot rod. Thanks for the inspiration and the wealth of information to get me started.

Dropshotting is a very effective technique to get into bass. Rarely will you catch a lunker though. With the jig your chances of big fish increases greatly. Always beef up your jig with a trailer. The larger profile will attract bigger fish. Consistent fish come on the dropshot, but for me my biggest fish have come on jigs. (besides swimbaits of coarse)

I will give you guys a little go to secret of mine for this year. My best bait has been a 1/2oz black and blue football head jig with a sweet beaver trailer 3.5 in magic craw red. I tell you guys this only because I like you. :thumright

How i get my jigs ready to fish is I trim the skirt up to the bend in the hook, or just a little below the bent, this way the skirt won't have as much interference with the hook penetrating the bass's mouth. Then I trim the weed guard so that it is level with the point of the hook, I cut it at an angle towards the top of the jig. Then I hook the trailer on and it is ready to fish. I use a 7ft heavy action rod rigged with 12lb to ensure good hooksets. If you do these things to your jigs I will guarantee you will hookup with most of your bites. But there is never a 100% guarrantee on hookups with jigs.

Another tip on jigs. Fan out the weed guard to make it more snag resistant and it will actually increase your hook ups on fish. Sounds like an oxymoron, but it really works.
