Interest on this lake has declined significantly in the last 5 years D/T
1) gillnetting
2) slot limit on kokanee (9-15")
3) unlimited harvest of lake, brown, and brook trout
4) cessation of annual plantings by WDFW

Re: Catch and ReleaseTrout BAIT fishing

The rules are confusing especially when it comes to bait fishing and what has to be counted in the limit when the fish is released. When I read page 11, this is how interpret the rule. Page 11 defines "trout", as used in the regs, includes all trout plus grayling (salmonidae family) and kokanee, ther...

Re: Glacier Nat'l Park Lake McDonald

Here is a comprehensive study done about 10 years ago which can be summarized as lots of small fish (5-8 lbs) with very few large fish, whitefish forage, suspend most of the time around 60' in summer, and thermocline sets in at 50' in summer. Also, no lead of any kind except DR balls 2 lbs. or large...

Re: Good early alpinelakes

If your interested in mackinaw, there are a few alpine lakes that have large fish but most of those lakes were planted around 1920. Bear lake was planted recently in 1996 but the fish take many years to get big. If you go to books.google.com you can find the old planting records starting around 1910...

Distinguishing Large vs Small Fish on Sonar

Furuno makes a FF with a length measurement ability that helps distinguish small fish from large fish. Here is a large lake trout (46") on the bottom with several smaller trout/kokanee supended near the thermocline. Sitex also has a measurement capability on their 750.

Re: Kokanee planting at Keechelus, Kachess, and Cle Elum

Another problem facing the reintroduction of Sockeye in Cle Elum is the drawdown for irrigation. The smolts only have a small window in the late Spring to get out of the reservoir. Last May, the water level was dropping so quickly, it was difficult to even launch a boat at Bell Creek which is usuall...

Re: Kokanee planting at Keechelus, Kachess, and Cle Elum

The lake/brown/brook/rainbow trout in Cle Elum provide a 365 day per year fishing opportunity where as the Sockeye, if it ever develops, would only be several days like Lake Wenatchee in Sept. The main problems facing the Soceye migration out of Cle Elum to the ocean are in the Yakima/Columbia river...

Kokanee planting at Keechelus, Kachess, and Cle Elum

The WDFW quit planting Kokanee several years ago on these lakes which has had a negative impact on fishing opportunities on all three. The limit was also reduced on Kokanee about the time the plantings stopped. The cost to raise and plant Kokanee is minimal in contrast to the amount of money Kokanee...

Re: fish finders

For the 1670f, I paid $503 at Hodges marine minus a $200 rebate and the 600w transducer $100, so total was $403 for the package. The 1670f also can use a 600w or a 1KW transducer. I think the future for FF will be a complete live screen like the Panoptix by Garmin instead of only the very right hand...

Re: Garmin Panoptix?

The price of the P21 is $999 (side view), P30 $1499 (down), and P 31 $1499(down/side) plus when you add the compatible unit, it is some serious money. I don't think Garmin makes an adapter for the P21(trolling motor mount) to allow it to shoot straight down so it would be a forward/side scan only wi...

Here is a video using the Garmin Panoptix for arctic char fishing by vertically jigging in deep water. This is similar to deep jigging for lake trout.

Give back, take the less fortunate fishing

I remember reading a post several months ago about a member in the Spokane area who took a person diagnosed with cancer fishing at Loon Lake. The story started me thinking about the less fortunate and how something as routine as a fishing trip can bring smiles, especially with kids. A lot of kids lo...

Fishing closure on Cle Elum/Cooper rivers?

Saw recent report about fishing closure on the Cle Elum and Cooper rivers. The post mentioned signs on the rivers said no fishing? Didn't see anything in the emergency rules or regs? Wonder who put up the signs.
