Cascadia Big Fishing Year Hits 82 Species and Still Going!

Its been a long while since I update you on my progress. This year I set out to catch/harvest 50 species of fish/shellfish in Oregon and Washington. I am excited to say that I smashed that mark back in July. July, August, and September proved to be very fruitful for the big fishing year and I quickl...

Re: Cascadia Big Fishing Year Update - 40 Species

You're an inspiration uplandsandpiper . I wish I had the time and funds to do what you are doing. Keep us posted with more pics. What an incredible goal you have for the year. What species has been the hardest to catch so far? fishnislife The hardest species so far was Lake Trout at Cle Elum. I' tr...

Cascadia Big Fishing Year Update - 40 Species

Hi all, Its been a while so I thought I would update on my progress to catch/harvest as many species of fish/shellfish in OR/WA as possible in 2014. I set a minimum goal of 50 species and I am only 10 away with 40 species!!! I am fairly confident that will be achieved by the end of July so logically...

Want to go shrimping! May 7 or 10

I would love the opportunity to get out and take part in Washington's spot shrimp fishery. If anyone has space on board their boat I would appreciate the chance to harvest a few shrimp. I am available May 7 & 10. It would be great to add this species to my Cascadia Big Fishing Year http://www.bigfis...

Re: 2014 Cascadia Big Fishing Year

Just a quick update for everybody. I am up to 17 species. In the past week I added steelhead and pacific eulachon on the Kalama and Cowlitz Rivers respectively. Been a lot of fun so far. I am hoping to hit 25 species by May 1. I post my updates on my website and facebook pages so be sure and check t...

Re: squiddin 2013

Drove up to the sound and tried my hand at squidding for the very first time ever. I managed to pick up one off the Illahee dock but that was it for a couple hours effort. The next day while blackmouth fishing (unsuccessfully) from my kayak near Manchester I was marking large schools of squid betwee...

Re: 2014 Cascadia Big Fishing Year (7 species)

Just a quick update for those following my big fishing year. I am up to 7 species so far. I made a recent trip to the Puget Sound where I picked up several new species. Be sure and check my website http://www.bigfishingyear.net to keep up with my progress. Here is a little video I put together of so...

Re: Lake Chelan Kokanee Get Together May 3-4, 2014

I may have to make the trip up there as part of my big year. Have the burbot gone deep that time of year? I'd like to connect with that species in 2014.

Re: 2014 Cascadia Big Fishing Year

I've added the "O-fish-al" Big Fishing Year calendar to my website. This is a rough outline of target species, dates, and tactics I have planned for achieving my goal. Please feel free to peruse the calendar and make any suggestions for techniques for species or to suggest overlooked species. http:/...

Re: 2014 Cascadia Big Fishing Year

haha, that sounds like a pretty cool idea, i take it you were a fan of the Big Year with steve martin and jack black. Shame to say I have not seen it yet but I started birdwatching when I was about 10 so the concept is pretty familiar to me. I'm definitely a data nut so the idea of keeping a list m...

2014 Cascadia Big Fishing Year

2014 is almost here folks and I am really looking forward to it. I've decided to pursue a "big fishing year" in the Cascadia region by trying to catch/harvest as many species of game/food fish and invertebrates as I can. I've been pouring over reports on this website (really appreciating hot spots a...

Re: First attempt at spinner making

Interesting video. Thanks for sharing. It appears that you're using octopus or finesse style hooks. I thought Siwash was preferred for single point hooks on spinners? My most recent attempts have been much better than my first go around that is pictured above. I've since gotten some size 5 blades a...

Re: First attempt at spinner making

I put together a video on how to make inline spinners for steelhead and salmon. They are really pretty simply to construct and cost less than $2 to make.
