Whatcom County’s Cain Lake is located about 9 ½ miles S.E. from Bellingham. It covers 72 surface acres, reaches depths of about 62 feet and lies at an elevation of 391 feet. Fish species include rainbow trout, largemouth bass and yellow perch. I have successfully fished this lake for largemouth bass but have not tried for the perch or trout. Prime bass habitat in this clear water lake includes pad fields, an abundance of logs and under water wood and private docks and floats.
Public access is provided by the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife. The small access area has limited but usually adequate parking space in a nice setting of tall cedar and fir trees. There is a shallow gravel boat launch area. Boating restrictions: internal combustion engines are no longer allowed on Cain Lake. . Bob Johansen
